★NEW How does Curriculum Night work at Hamilton?

Curriculum Night is a chance to spend a few hours in your student's shoes. After a brief welcome from Principal Manza, you will follow your student's schedule through the day, starting in 1st period and ending in 6th period. In each classroom, the teacher will give an overview of themselves, the goals and plans for the year, and take general Q&A (if you've got questions specific to your student, the school asks that you connect with the teacher directly at a different time). After 10-15 minutes, Principal Manza will let everyone know it's time to switch classes and you move on to the next period. Keep an eye out for other parents as you do--you'll get to see who your student bumps into during passing time. Curriculum Night is a parent-only event, though some teachers invite their students to come help out (which is cool).

    • Bring your student's schedule (including room numbers) with you.

    • Plan to be there for the whole duration (if possible) in order to hear from all the teachers.

    • 6th Grade families (and any families who are new to Hamilton) have a special orientation in the gym 30 min before Curriculum Night, where Principal Manza will talk more generally about Hamilton, introduce key support staff, and take questions. All are welcome to attend, of course.

    • PTSA Members will be on hand to answer questions, help with email/membership sign-up, and accept donations. Curriculum Night is the official kick-off to our Fundraising Campaign Drive!

    Reflections Art Contest

Students are invited to create works for the 2018-19 Reflections Art Contest. This year is the 50th year of the contest. The theme is "Heroes Around Me."

Reflections is a National PTA program that recognizes excellence in student art.  During its 50 year history, millions of students have participated. Students submit their work at school, with selected works advancing to the city, state and national competitions.  In the past few years, a number of Hamilton student works have advanced to the state and national levels, including last year's honorable mention in photography.

Reflections takes submissions in the fields of literature, visual arts, photography, music composition, dance choreography and film production. Students may submit work in more then one category (or even all of them) but each entry must be the work of an individual student (no group entries).

The deadline for all submissions will be Thursday, November 1. The works will be displayed and winners will be chosen the following week.
Entry specifications will be available soon on the PTSA Reflections page.

    Meet the New Assistant Principal

    Hamilton PTSA

★NEW Asst. Principal Mrs. Anne Crowthers, Ed. D.

    The Basics

Greetings, HAWKS! My name is Anne Crowthers. I moved to Seattle from the Bay Area, CA, and now live in the Magnolia area with my husband, Will, and two fur babies (found as stray yorkies), Bonnie and Clyde!
I enjoy singing at church, hula/Tahitian dancing, traveling, reading, watching movies, and spending time with family and friends. I look forward to serving you as one of Hamilton’s assistant principals next 2018-2019 school year.

This will be my 12th year (and counting) in education, my 5th year in administration, and my FIRST YEAR at Hamilton International Middle School. I am excited to work together with our Administrative Team, as well as each and every one of you, to make this year our best one yet!

    My Childhood

I grew up in Union City, California (east bay). I attended public school all throughout my K-12 education, and was inspired to be a teacher early on in my childhood. I used to play “school” at my mother’s work (she was the secretary to the Dean of Ed. Psych. At CSU East Bay), in a classroom next to her office. Imagine my surprise when eventually, my first doctoral class would be held in that same exact classroom!

    My Education

I graduated from California State University, East Bay with a B.A. in English – options in American Literature and Creative Writing. I immediately moved on to receive my single- subject teaching credential and began teaching English (gen. ed. and honors) to 9th-10th Grade students. I worked towards my administrative credential, was simultaneously a TK-8th Grade principal in the Bay Area, and graduated with my Master’s Degree (2015) and Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership, Social Justice this past June 2018.

    Safety Update

Last Friday, September 14th, Seattle Fire Station #9 was here to conduct our first fire drill of the year. They inspected the building and monitored our drill, and were very impressed with our performance. Our staff and students quickly and efficiently evacuated the building, lined up, and took attendance on the Wallingford Playfield in record time. A big thank you goes out to our staff for their diligence in making sure the building was clear, getting students lined up, and taking attendance quickly, and to our students who lined up quickly and quietly.

At Hamilton, we will conduct at least one safety-related drill per month, including summer months when school is in session with students. This year we will be practicing drills related to three basic functional threat responses: shelter in place, lockdown, and evacuation. In addition, during the annual October Great Washington ShakeOut on October 18, 2018, Hamilton will participate with all Seattle schools in an earthquake and emergency communication and mapping drill.

If you have any questions about our safety drills, please contact Assistant Principal, Bethany Sjoberg
