    (Almost) Summer PTSA Membership Meeting, Wednesday, May 25 - NEW

    Please join us for our final PTSA Membership Meeting of the school year – the (Almost) Summer Membership Meeting – happening on Wednesday, May 25, 7 - 9 PM in the Hamilton Library.

    At this meeting, we'll be voting on:

    • The 2016-17 PTSA Budget

    • An update to our Standing Rules

    • Next year's PSTA Board Members

    For our PTSA Board elections, we’ll be accepting motions from the floor (meaning you can nominate someone in attendance, or yourself!), and we will vote on all positions for which we have candidates.

    Admission is free and pizza, water and popsicles will be provided. Sodas may be purchased for $1. Only Hamilton 8th graders may attend. Students must sign up during 8th grade lunch May 4-13. Any students leaving before 10 PM will need to be signed out by an adult volunteer.  

    There will be a fun photo booth with loads of props! Summer styles are fine, being mindful of the HIMS dress code.

    Volunteers Needed for 8th Grade Promotion, Friday, June 24

    Submit Your Priorities for the Washington State PTA 2016 Legislative Platform!

    Every two years, the Washington state PTA prioritizes its legislative agenda based on input from its members. Any PTSA member can submit a proposal. The key dates for this cycle are:

    • Wednesday, May 18: Title and short description due

    • Wednesday, June 1: Complete issue submittal form due

    Fully funding schools is the current top prioritization, but proposals can be on any number of issues. More information on the process can be found in the Advocacy section of the Washington State PTA website.     Last Chance to Order Yearbooks

    If you haven’t yet ordered a Yearbook, they will go on sale again for $20 from May 16 - May 30, and require an order form with a check or cash. Students can get the order form from their homeroom teachers or the main office. To check whether you ordered one at the start of the year, ask the main office or Ms. Smith in room 102.

    May is Bike Everywhere Month!  Join the Roller Rodeo, Friday, May 27

    Students can register for the HIMS HAWK TEAM at, using a parent or guardian’s email address. They can record their commute trips and compare or compete with each other. Those who choose to compete will create a user name (not their full name) which will appear on the website to protect their privacy. Participants will be entered into weekly drawings for cool prizes, including a brand new bike, panniers, and much more!

    The month will culminate with a HIMS HAWKS ROLLER RODEO! Students are invited to come ready to roll with their bikes, scooters, and roller blades on Friday, May 27 after school at 2:30 - 4 PM. They will get a treat simply for participating! Activities will include a decorating station, practicing fun roller skills, and the opportunity to win more prizes!  Be on the lookout for a permission slip to participate.

    International Schools/Dual Language Immersion Task Force & Community Meetings

    The District is putting together a task force to study the impacts, risks and benefits of sustaining and expanding Seattle's International Schools and Dual Language Immersion programs. The Superintendent will use this report, along with other important data, to make recommendations to the School Board for potential changes in the 2017-18 school year.  

    The task force will include teachers and staff, parents/guardians, and community members who represent the diversity of Seattle Public Schools and can bring an open mind, a passion for student learning, and a willingness to engage in inquiry, meaningful dialogue, and collaboration.

    Community outreach meetings will also be held throughout the city. Interpreters will be provided at each site for Spanish, Mandarin, and Japanese, and additional languages as needed.

    HIMS Chamber Orchestra Performs at Folklife, Saturday, May 28

    Come and see the HIMS Chamber Orchestra in combination with the JAMS Chamber Orchestra perform at Folklife 2016! Their performance is on Saturday, May 28 at 11 AM at the Mural Amphitheater Stage at Seattle Center. Support our students and have a great time taking in the sights and sounds of Folklife! Don't forget to bring the whole family.

    There are only 3 positions left and then the 2016-17 FOMAHI Board will be complete. Middle school goes by in a flash, so don't wait to get plugged in as a volunteer. Helping out in the HIMS music department is a rewarding way to get connected during your child's middle school years. The Board still need:

    • VP of Concert Operations - Oversees the planning of each Band, Jazz, Orchestra, and Vocal concert by coordinating with the Concert Coordinator, Bake Sales Chair, AV Recorder, and Concert Program Chair; Attends monthly Board meetings

    • Secretary - Attends monthly Board meetings; Takes meeting minutes; Does annual Bylaws update; Is on the Nominating Committee in Spring; Maintains FOMAHI files

    • Fundraising Chair - Chair of Musicathon; Supports the collection of Enrichment Fees/Registration in Fall; Oversees other potential fundraising opportunities like Matching Gifts and Scrip; Attends monthly Board meetings

    Interested in a smaller way to volunteer in the music department? The following positions are also available:

    • Merchandise coordinator

    • Trip coordinator for individual trips/festivals

    • Concert program creator (for Band, Orchestra, Choir/Vocal Jazz, or Jazz Ensembles)

    • Concert coordinator (for Band, Choir/Vocal Jazz, or Jazz Ensembles)

    • Orchestra Bake Sale Coordinator

    UW Math Hour:  “Stable Matching,” 5/15

    In 2012, a Nobel Prize in Economics was given in part for the solution to the following problem: Say we have 100 boys and 100 girls and we want to make them into couples. Everyone makes a list of their ideal partners from 1 to 100 in order of most favorite to least favorite. The question now is whether there is a way to match everyone up so that the matching is “stable.” This means that there is no couple (A,B) in our matching where girl A prefers some other boy to B and boy B prefers some other girl to A. In this Math Hour with Anna Karlin of the UW Computer Science Dept. you will learn about an efficient algorithm for solving this problem and the fascinating properties of stable matchings.

    “Fruit Science” Summer Camp with City Fruit & Seattle Parks and Recreation

    City Fruit has partnered with Seattle Parks and Recreation to offer “Fruit Science Camp.” Campers will get hands-on experience tending to a garden, tasting fruit, getting connected with their local environment, and learning about Seattle’s local food businesses. Qualifying middle school students will receive full scholarships. Camp will be held in one week sessions beginning July 11 and will run from 9 AM-6 PM on weekdays. Find more information here
