Calendar of Upcoming Events
Hamilton Families, Staff and Community Members:
Let the countdown begin! We’re just 6 short days from kicking off a new wonderful year at Hamilton International, and, on behalf our your Hamilton PTSA, I want to welcome you and let you know that we look forward to working alongside you this school year to make the Hamilton experience a great one for all our students!
And we’re not waiting til next week! We actually got the ball rolling this past Monday evening, as we welcomed some new faces at our 6th Grade Families Dessert Social. Thanks to all who were able to attend and many thanks to our WEB leaders and parent volunteers, and to Dr. Shafeena Chatur and Ballard Orthodontics for sponsoring all the tasty treats at the event, and for providing giveaways to all 6th graders (including the raffle’s grand prize—a Kindle!).
Our PTSA events team looks forward to holding many more exciting happenings at Hamilton this school year. Expect to hear more from:
These ladies not only want to bring good times to Hamilton, they also want to hear about your not-so-good times, your feedback, and your ideas that will help build a Hamilton that represents all our families. Please reach out to them if you have anything you’d like to share with our board throughout the school year.
Lastly, we want to make sure you hear from us! If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already signed up to receive our newsletter, The Hamilton Weekly News, but if you haven’t—or know someone who hasn’t—be sure you visit http://himsptsa.ourschoolpages.com/ to opt in today (and tell your fellow Hamilton parents to as well).
With that, I wish you all a sweet (but not sweltering) last few days of summer break, and I look forward to meeting you at our First Day Coffee or Hamilton Parents’ Back to School Party (more info below).

Start the Year Off With Service: Back to School Volunteers Needed!
When all of our students arrive at Hamilton on September 7, our administration team could use some help from families—especially veteran Hamilton families—to ease that transition and help make the first hour of the school year go smoothly.
Volunteers are needed for the following tasks:
Traffic direction (on 41st, Woodlawn and Densmore)
Welcoming students at the doors
Helping students find classrooms, open lockers and navigate the hallways
Data Entry (look up and record student lunch pin numbers)
Traffic and Hallway help is sought for Thursday and Friday as well.
See details and sign up here. Thank you!
First Day Coffee
Wednesday, Sept. 7, from 8:45–9:45am
Hawk's Nest (above the cafeteria)
After seeing your student off, please plan to stay for a cup of coffee and breakfast treats, mingle with other parents, and hear a few words from Principal Blish. PTSA Board members will also be on hand to answer questions.
Hamilton Parents "Back to School Party"
Friday, Sept 23rd from 6:30–9:30pm
Phinney Neighborhood Center (6532 Phinney Ave N.)
Please join us for our annual parents-only back to school party! Come celebrate the new school year with fellow parents and enjoy beverages and light appetizers. Hope to see you there! Reminder: this is a parents-only event.
Many thanks to event sponsor Fremont Brewing for helping make this fun event possible! Fremont Brewing’s Matt Lincecum and Sara Nelson are HIMS parents, and we truly appreciate their support of our school community.
Dear Hamilton International Families,
I am very much looking forward to the beginning of the year. Hamilton is an extraordinary community and it’s only that when our students are here. It’s also—metaphorically—a wobbly stool without you. This is your school.
The first-day information went out in a letter I broadcast last evening.
I did want to update you on the portable classrooms you’ve seen if you’ve been by school lately, as well as our plans for outdoor play time.
As I write we have permits for the electrical work and we expect them to be powered tomorrow. A fire inspection (expected Saturday) will allow us to move in. That’s tight for our teachers but Brandon, Erin, Dan, and Nichole are ready for all contingencies.
The playspace that is now the site for the portables isn’t completely gone, but it is a learning space now. Students will be able to use that area, and we are also planning to use part of Wallingford Park as the weather and field conditions allow. Half of the gym is open for our use as well, but, with a PE class held in the other half, we will be limiting its use to ensure those students are getting an optimal learning environment.
Other than those details we are ready to open our doors on Wednesday. Welcome to 2016-17 and, go Hawks!

Dropoff and Pickup Directions
Parents/guardians dropping off and picking up their students should travel west only on 41st St. (the south side of HIMS) so that students can safely get in or out of their car on the school side of the street. Otherwise traffic gridlock and unsafe conditions for our students and neighbors result. Please refer to the HIMS traffic flow map as well as the school rule for dropoff and pickup.
Calling all guest speakers!
Hamilton International Middle School is looking for community members to speak at 2016–17 HIMS Talks. HIMS Talks are student and community member led talks on topics that speakers are passionate about. The guiding principles behind HIMS Talks are that they have personal and global connections that can be tied to Hamilton middle school students. The basic tenets is to broaden perspectives, cultivate global awareness, and connect community. Talks should be 10 minutes long with a 10 minute Q&A period. They will take place during homeroom (1:00–1:30pm) monthly and are open to all students at all grade levels. If interested and to receive additional information, please send your contact info to Dana Radcliffe (firstname.lastname@example.org) and Brandon Severance (email@example.com). Thanks, gracias, and arigato!

Music & Art
It’s Time to Register Your Music Student with FOMAHI!
77% of Hamilton students participate in our award-winning music program, but the school district funds less than 30% of related expenses! We’re the Friends of Music at Hamilton International (FOMAHI), a 100% volunteer organization that fundraises for—and supports—the school’s music program. Throughout the year, we license sheet music, pay for instrument tuning and repairs, subsidize out-of-state trips to major competitions, and provide scholarships to students in need. Please register your music student(s) today at www.fomahi.org. There is a $25 enrichment fee per student.
HOST After-School Programs
HOST program registration will be available in mid September and HOST classes will start in early October.
