    Dear Hamilton International Families,

    There was quite a provocative essay in the New York Times two Sundays ago – well, provocative if you’re the type of person who finds reading about teaching styles is provocative. What it provoked for me was a reconsideration of one of the accepted wisdoms of contemporary teaching. This wisdom is that students should be doing more of the work in class than the adults—the best way for students to learn, according to conventional thinking, is to actively engage in the concepts and skills with their peers including teaching their peers. The essay (you can find it here) in fact cites a study, a Harvard physics professor, and a blogger arguing in favor of “active learning” – students should not be passive recipients of information but should ‘use’ their knowledge and skills, lead discussions and teacher the new material, while the teacher coaches, supports, provides the background material.

    Molly Worthen, the essayist, teaches history at the University of North Carolina. She argues in favor of the extended lecture, and this is not the lecture we might picture in a movie where a tweed-coated white male in a monotone voice delivering facts to a group of young people with their eyes rolling, closed, or their pencils immobile above a notebook.

    Worthen argues that a lecture is an extended argument that demands both logic and emotion, not a recitation of facts, but rather about what connects facts. And it puts a great and important demand on students – one that requires that they to do all of the complex thinking we believe is most important to learn – analyzing, synthesizing, and responding while they listen and take notes for an hour (!). (She also favors the pencil and notebook over the laptop – the slower pace of handwriting means students have to find what’s important to make connections, while typing is closer to recording.)

    When I was in graduate school for teaching, we heard that adolescents can only listen for between 8-12 minutes depending on their age. After delivering information for 10 minutes, students need to do something with the new information – talk about it, practice it, use it in a new way.

    Middle school is not college. We are preparing students to be ready for college but more immediately for high school – which, itself is not college; you won’t find many high school lecture classes. However, I wonder if we should be helping students develop the listening, note-taking, and thinking skills that a longer oral presentation demands.  If this is provocative to you, drop me a note.

    Library League’s Literary Costume Party & Contest

    Book lovers and history lovers!  Join the Library league this Friday, Oct. 30, during your homeroom and lunch for our Literary Costume Party & Contest!  Dress up as a character from a book or from history.  Space is limited, so be among the first students or staff to visit the library Friday morning before school – in costume – and bring a bag of store-bought treats to exchange for an admission ticket. Costume contest winner will receive a $25 Amazon gift card.  Stop by the library today to pick up an orange invitation with more details.


    Friday you can wear costumes to school.  There are a few guidelines for costumes:


    • All costume preparations are to be completed at home.


    • No masks are to be worn during the school day.


    • No costumes that depict violence or violent characters.


    • No costumes that promote the use of illegal substances or activities, are derogatory or disrespectful are allowed.


    • No big props (swords, weapons, balloons, etc.).


    • Teachers may take away anything that is used improperly or considered inappropriate for school.  It can be claimed in the main office at the end of the school day.

    SKI BUS!!

    Because there have been many questions about the ski bus, the meeting has been moved up!

    Please make every effort to attend the meeting on Wednesday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the HIMS Commons. Our Ski MOHAN representative will be there.

    Also, an update on the 2004 birthday glitch is that it's fixed as of this morning!

    Finally, there is an update of credit/refunds for those of you still waiting.  This update is from parent Debbie Murray:

    It took a while, but I heard back from Mohan about credits/refunds this morning. They asked we register our kids and then send an email requesting our credit from last year. Once they receive the payment, they will apply the credit back to our account.

    When I emailed my request this morning, Mohan responded so quickly via phone the electronic payment didn't show up in their system yet. I had received the payment receipt with the registration number but they couldn't process the credit yet. I'm suppose to follow up with them if I don't receive an email receipt of the credit in the next day or two. 

    Thank you Debbie! Good luck everyone. I know MOHAN is off to a bumpy start this fall but I have faith that it will come together sooner than later.

    Highly Capable Services Advisory Committee (HCSAC) meets Tuesday, November 3, at Cascadia (Lincoln High School - 4400 Interlake Ave N.) in the library, from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

    These meetings are open to the public and you are encouraged to attend. Members of the committee are comprised mainly of a staff representative and a parent representative from each of the schools with a Highly Capable Cohort.  Hamilton's parent representative is Noelle Clemons.     We’re now two weeks into the Hamilton PTSA 2015 Fall Fund Drive, and we’re making progress. But we still need your help!  The PTSA’s budgeted fundraising goal for 2015-2016 is $95,000.

    Please consider making a gift during the Fall Fund Drive to support the programs and community that are integral to your student’s experience at Hamilton. This academic year, your tax-deductible donation will help to fund:

            THE STUDENT:  Enrichment and Scholarships (Academic Support, After-School Sports, Student Scholarships, HOST program, Student Clubs and Activities)

             THE CLASSROOM:  Academic Excellence and Teacher Support (Library and Classroom needs, Academic Intervention Specialist, Teacher Supply Fund, Professional Development, Mini Grants)

           THE COMMUNITY:  Building and Sustaining Hamilton  (All-School Events such as Pi Night and Skate Night, Guest Speakers, Grade-Level Social Event, Staff Appreciation)

    Leaders from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and educators from Washington school districts are hosting five tele-town halls in October and November to build awareness and understanding of Washington's K-12 learning standards and assessments.

    It's a great opportunity to learn more and ask questions about the state's learning standards and assessments. You can join any of the conversations live and ask questions at



    Vote NO on I-1366

    The Washington State PTA opposes I-1366 because it could significantly exacerbate the lack of funding for public education. Let’s stop this initiative—we can’t afford to make things worse with his bad idea. The Seattle Times Opinion page has this additional info:

    Reflections art entries are due TOMORROW

    This is the final week to enter the Reflections art contest. This year’s theme is “Let your imagination fly.”

    Reflections is a national PTA program that recognizes excellence in student art and takes submissions in the areas of literature, visual arts, photography, music composition, dance choreography, and film production. Students may submit more than one work, and all entries must be the original work of one student.

    Turn in entries along with completed entry forms using the box labeled “ REFLECTIONS” in the HIMS Main Office. Please ask someone at the front desk if you are having trouble locating the box. The deadline for submissions is TOMORROW, Oct. 30.

    The Orchestra is seeking one cello (loan or donation) – can you help?

    Do you have a ¾- or full-sized cello collecting dust at home? Would you consider loaning or donating your cello to Cadet Orchestra! We have a record-breaking 21-cello players in our Cadet Orchestra! After our initial scramble for extra cellos, we are now just ONE cello away from having each student having their own cello to use during daily class rehearsals.     2015-16 enrichment fees are now due

    If you have a student in a daytime band, orchestra, jazz or choir class, your student’s enrichment fee is now due. Please go to to register with FOMAHI and pay your dues.

    PE waiver reminder

    The school district requires all students to get 60 hours of physical activity (one semester of PE) per school year. If you have a student who has chosen to take multiple arts/language classes in lieu of PE, you MUST fill out a waiver and have it approved by December 1. PE waivers are also available for religious and medical reasons. (NOTE: PE waivers are not handled by FOMAHI. However, our music students may be impacted by the rule.)

    Vocal Jazz students – return your Camp Burton packets!

    Camp Burton is a week from Saturday – if you have not returned your packets and paid, please do so this week! Go to to pay the trip fee. (Can also be paid by check.) Don’t miss out on the trip!

    Vocal Jazz needs a trip coordinator for Lionel Hampton

    The Vocal Jazz students will be going to the annual Lionel Hampton event in February. While that might seem a long way away, we need a coordinator to begin working on the details as soon as possible. If you are interested in helping, please contact Ms. Babbitt.





    • Boys and Girls Basketball season begins in December
    • The first game of the season will be January 9, and the last game will be March 19.
    • Tryouts will be held during the week of December 7
    • Students must have the following on file in order to try out:
      • SPS Athletics Physical
      • Basketball Waiver
      • Concussion Waiver
      • Sudden Cardiac Arrest Waiver
    • Paperwork can be found on the HIMS website or in the main office.
    • All paperwork is due no later than Wednesday, December 2, 2015. For student safety reasons, absolutely NO exceptions can be made.




    Practices are on Tuesdays and Thursday for Varsity and JV players and are from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.
