Hamilton Happenings

We are at the midpoint of the Hamilton Hawks 2014 Fall Fund Drive and we appreciate the donations we have gotten so far. Remember, this is our only fund drive and it provides the budget for all PTSA activities this year. Are you wondering how the 2014-2015 PTSA budget might be different from previous years?Here are some highlights of what’s new this year:
-- Increase in funding for Academic Enrichment, helping to fund in-school academic enrichment programs such as Writers in the Schools and Science on Wheels, and also additional funding to support Visual and Performing Arts and Ceramics at Hamilton
-- Funding/support for the new WEB (“Where Everyone Belongs”) program, helping to ease the transition and increase connections for new Hamilton students
-- Increase in the amount allocated to the Family Support/Scholarship Fund, which helps to provide support to Hamilton families in need

PE Waiver Clarification

Only activities during the Months of Sept – June are eligible towards PE Waiver compliance.If your child is currently participating in an activity,please submit a letter and only include the total number of hours that have been completed between the dates September 3rd to end of currentactivity.

Submit signed letter from coach or instructor (must be the original) prior to October 17th for those activities that have already begun tobe counted towards total number of hours of participation.
The letter requirements for all HOST and SPS sponsored activities will be taken care of by the Coach/Instructor for the team as a whole.

Counseling Center News

The HIMS Counseling Center has been busy! In addition to supporting students new to the building and advising schedule change requests, we are planning future activities.
-- We recently completed a school wide student survey to better understand the needs of our student body. This information will help us direct our individual, small group, and school wide interventions.

-- During October, Neighborcare Therapist, Luke Sworts, is promoting National Bullying Prevention Monthwith several activities including a writing contest, paper chains for unity, and an anti-bullying pledge.

-- Sixth grade counselor, Lilia Goldsmith, is working with four teachers and forty-five 8th graders to support incoming 6th graders through the WEB (Where Everyone Belongs www.boomerangproject.com) Program. These WEB leaders meet every other week and will hold a social lunch at the end of the month with the 6th grade students.

-- The Second Step Program will also be rolled out this week. Second Step teaches students socio-emotional skills every Thursday during homeroom.

Legislative Update

On Tuesday, Nov. 4th, Washington state voters will be asked to consider Initiative 1351 that would reduce class sizes. As Washington is all vote-by-mail, the ballots should be hitting your mailboxes within the next week or so.Here is some background information to help you. The initiative was drafted and is being promoted by theWashington Education Association(WEA). It is being opposed by the League of Education Voters – here is theirblog poston the initiative.

The Hamilton PTSA has not taken a position on the initiative. Additionally, the Washington State PTAis neutral on the initiative and the Seattle Council of PTSAs has not taken a position.Washington ranks 47th out of 50 states for class sizes. I-1351 would require by 2018 that kindergarten through third grade classes have no more than 17 students.

Proponents say that reductions in class size will help all students and teachers, while creating opportunities for kids to receive one-on-one attention. Opponents say that this will create another unfunded mandate at a time when the state legislture is not funding basic education. I-1352 is supported by Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn. His statement can be found here. The Seattle Times came out against it here.

October 31 Deadline Approaching for Reflections Students Art Contest

The first artwork has been submitted to the 2014-15 PTA Reflections Art Contest, but it wants company. So remind your kids that the October 31st deadline is approaching.

Students are invited to submit works of visual art, literature, photography, music composition, dance choreography and film production, inspired by the theme “The world would be a better place if.…”Artists with ADA recognized disabilities may choose to submit in either the “Special Artists” category or the applicable genre category.Works will be judged by arts professionals and a select number will be chosen to go on to the citywide contest, where they will be displayed at Seattle Center House, and have a chance to advance to state and national competitions.

Submissions must be accompanied by a completed entry form (which needs to be signed by a parent or guardian) and may be placed in the large box in the main office.Entry forms and contest rules are available in the office or may be found here. It's time to sign upfor our second Staff Appreciation Luncheon of the year.We will host our fabulousstaff on October 29, 2014 (early release day!) a delicious brown bag lunch for them to enjoy during their staff meeting.Each staff member hasturned in an order form for their perfect sandwich.

We will need lots of volunteers on hand Wednesday morning to help make sandwiches and packthe bags!Can't be there? No problem,help us out with the ingredients needed to make these wonderful lunches.Please note that all sandwich-making donations will need to be brought to the staff lounge BY TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28TH at the end of the school day. Desserts and drinks willneed to arrive to school by 10:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Then your student must complete a PE Waiver and place it in the marked box on the front counter of the HIMS Main Office by December 1, 2014. A new PE waiver form must be filled out each year and can be found on the HIMS website.

High School/Private School Application Process for the 2015-2016 School Year

The High School/Private School application process has started for many Private Educational Institutions in Seattle. Please note that in order foryour request to be completed, you need to submit the following items together, to Ms. Peila in Rm 105C.

All application requests are due NO LATER than December 1st 2014 (even though the application school may accept them through the start ofJanuary) to insure timely mailing prior to HIMS holiday break.

* Application form completed for each school with signature from parent/guardian

* One (1) 12” x 9 “ self-addressed manila envelope with four (4) stamps affixed on it PER request.Please use YOUR address as the return addressdue to the fact that many are mailed right before the Holiday break.If the envelope is returned to you, do not open it (the receiving school will notaccept an opened envelope) and hand deliver to the school in question.

* The teacher recommendation form must be distributed to the teacher separately, no later than November 15th, please include a self-addressedenvelope; items 2 and 4 are mailed separately.

Information included in the packet will be:
  • Current progress report
  • Last two (2) years of report cards, if available
  • Historical Grades and Cumulative Info reports
  • MSP and MAP scores from the last year, if available
  • Incident report – if applicable
  • Attendance record

The receiving school will request final grades if necessary. A follow up is done in May/June for all accepted applicants. Comprehensive list ofapplicants and schools they were completed for, are kept for three (3) years.

SPECIAL NOTE: Lakeside has a two (2) piece process, you MUST go online and submit the electronic information (Ms. Peila is HIMS contact person)form AS WELL as submit a request form following steps 1-4 listed above.

Principal's Letter



This week's letter comes from Assistant Principal Tipton Blish

Dear Hamilton International Families,

Any discussion about public education these days inevitably touches on the Common Core State Standards, the tests developed to measure students’ meeting those standards, and inevitably the squeezing of the curriculum to make room for core literacy and numeracy standards and standardized tests to measure them. As Cindy noted a couple of weeks ago, Washington students will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium’s (SBAC) summative assessment this spring in math and literacy.

Hamilton teachers have been working with the core standards for several years and have been studying to understand these new assessments. Our teachers are acutely aware of the expectations we as a society have put on our students as well as the expectation students be able to express themselves creatively, uniquely, personally. (It is not just our math and language arts teachers, but the full gamut of academic disciplines—music, world languages, science, fine arts teachers have developed curriculum that teaches students computation,academic vocabulary, and argumentation.)

They are also acutely aware of the needs of their students—the need to engage with their friends, to be known for who they are, to be able to demonstrate what they’ve learned in varied ways. Those ways do include writing essays based on readings on short notice—as the SBAC will ask.But it also includes solving long, complex math problems with a partner, or bouncing ideas about what “origin stories” have in common so a student can show in writing her understanding of the concept, her ability to take a position supported by evidence, and express it with appropriate language.

There will be testing, and the new SBAC state test will be a new challenge for our students. And they will be prepared. But we will also measure learning – learning linked to the Common Core – in varied ways. As always, teachers are your point of contact about your students’ learning and how it’s assessed. They are an amazingly creative group of professionals, and you will see that creativity applied to opening up – ‘unsqueezing’ – the curriculum.
