Welcome back! We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable spring break. With the beginning of the fourth quarter we are in the home stretch of the 2015-2016 school year. Students have been working hard in their classes all year and we are excited for the great work to continue.
The new quarter offers a great opportunity to reset and establish your academic goals for the remainder of the school year. Talk to your students about their school work and the academic and social goals they have set for themselves and the goals you have set as a family. As a staff we will be diligent in making sure that we are present and thoughtful in our work with students and families. We can help students reach or redefine their academic goals. It is good practice to evaluate your work and make adjustments if necessary to guarantee success. Our work is centered on student growth, academically, socially and emotionally, and we appreciate our partnership with you in this venture.
The end of the year is often busy with culminating projects and performances and the end of the semester will come quickly. It is important to stay connected to your student’s workload and assignments so that they are feeling supported and successful. Teachers are always available to help students and families navigate the grade book and the classroom assignments. Questions are always appreciated so that there is clarity in classroom procedures and expectations.
This is a great community of learners.

Seeking PTSA Budget & Financial Review Committee Members
Spring Budget Committee
The PTSA is seeking members to serve on a Budget Committee this spring. This committee will review expenses for the programs and events that have occurred in 2015-2016, evaluate new budgetary requests, and make recommendations to the Board regarding the makeup of next year's budget.
The committee is expected to meet twice (once in late April and once in early/mid-May) for a total of about 4 hours. The PTSA Treasurer will chair the meetings. Please contact Treasurer Barbara Vaughey at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in volunteering.
Summer Financial Review Committee
Three individuals are also needed to serve on a committee to review and audit the PTSA’s financial records after the close of the 2015-2016 fiscal year. The state PTA provides a checklist for committee members to use, and does not expect that members will have an accounting background.
The financial review is expected to take a total of about 3-4 hours and should be performed in July or early August, to be scheduled at the convenience of the committee members. Please contact Treasurer Barbara Vaughey at email@example.com if you are interested in volunteering.

Submit Your Priorities for the Washington State PTA 2016 Legislative Platform!
Every two years, the Washington state PTA prioritizes its legislative agenda based on input from its members. Any PTSA member can submit a proposal. The key dates for this cycle are:

Wednesday, June 1: Complete issue submittal form due
Fully funding schools is the current top prioritization, but proposals can be on any number of issues. Come to the 2016 HIMS Science Expo!, Thursday, April 28 - NEW
The HIMS Science Department is excited to announce the 2016 Science Expo, on the evening of Thursday, April 28 from 6 to 7:15 PM. Students have prepared science investigations, designed engineering projects, read nonfiction science books to present, or researched a STEM career.
Students eligible for the 2016 Middle School Science & Engineering Fair will be evaluated by grade level teams, and candidates will be announced by Friday, May 6 to go on to present their work at the district science fair on June 2. Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to come and support our students’ hard work!
Mental Health Awareness Week, April 25-29 - NEW
During the week of April 25 the Hamilton community has the opportunity to learn about the impact of mental illness and its impact on students. In addition to the parent education night on Tuesday (see below), NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) will be making 2 presentations to some students about the stigma of mental illness on Wednesday. Throughout the week the counseling department will also be hosting stress reduction activities at lunch to promote positive mental health and prepare students for upcoming testing in May (which happens to be Mental Health Month!). You are encouraged to talk to about how to foster good mental health in your home. Here are some websites that have links to additional resources and conversation starters:
Mental Health Education for Parents, Tuesday, April 26
What factors lead to stress and depression for teens? How can we all, as a community, help to prevent youth suicide? Who is at risk, what are the warning signs and how can we help? Cindy Gonzalez from Youth Suicide Prevention Program will present on these vital topics Tuesday, April 26, 6:30-8 PM in the Library. Cindy works with at risk youth, GLBTQ community, immigrant communities and victims of domestic violence. She is also an emergency department social worker at a local hospital. This event is for parents only.

School Board Oversight Work Session TONIGHT to include Highly Capable Department - NEW
At the recent PTSA General Meeting, many parents asked questions about the workings of the Highly Capable department. Seattle Public School Board Director Rick Burke invited any interested parents to attend the School Board Oversight Work Session on Thursday, April 21, from 6:30-8 PM, in room 2750 at the John Stanford Center. This is a 2-part work session covering Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction, including Highly Capable. While public testimony is not currently part of work session agendas, these work sessions are a critical window into transparent operation of SPS departments. Please note that this meeting is NOT in the main auditorium. Since it is upstairs, you will need to ask Security for a 4-digit code to get upstairs to the room. Rick looks forward to having some community guests present.

Get your 8th Grader on Board the End-of-Year Celebration Cruise!, Thurs., June 23 - NEW
Eighth graders will board at the WA Museum of Natural History in South Lake Union and cruise through the locks to Pier 55 on Thursday, June 23! Permission slips were sent home, and are due by June 4. If they are turned in by Friday, April 29 students may choose their bus and who they sit with. The $45 fee covers food, drink, DJ, bus, and boat transportation. PLEASE consider an additional donation to support those who need assistance so that all 8th grader have a chance to go! Congratulations to 8th graders on the end of their final year at Hamilton!
International Schools/Dual Language Immersion Task Force & Community Meetings - NEW
The District is putting together a task force to study the impacts, risks and benefits of sustaining and expanding Seattle's International Schools and Dual Language Immersion programs. The Superintendent will use this report, along with other important data, to make recommendations to the School Board for potential changes in the 2017-18 school year.
The task force will include teachers and staff, parents/guardians, and community members who represent the diversity of Seattle Public Schools and can bring an open mind, a passion for student learning, and a willingness to engage in inquiry, meaningful dialogue, and collaboration.

Community outreach meetings will also be held throughout the city. Interpreters will be provided at each site for Spanish, Mandarin, and Japanese, and additional languages as needed.

Seattle Public Schools Boundary Changes Community Meetings - Tonight!
As part of the growth boundaries approved in 2013, there will be boundary changes for 18 attendance area elementary and 9 middle schools in Fall 2017. Take a look at the boundaries map. These changes help balance enrollment and create attendance areas for new schools opening in the 2017-18 school year. Seattle Public Schools will hold a series of community meetings about the upcoming boundary changes on the following dates:

According to the SPS Growth Boundaries update, "if the Seattle School Board considers changes to the 2017-18 attendance area boundaries that were approved in 2013, they will do so in October 2016." Spring Smarter Balanced Assessment & Measurement of Student Practice Information
Please note the schedule of student assessments below for this spring. The Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) is computer-based and students will be taking it on laptop computers. They will take the assessment in the morning and then join their regular classes in the afternoons. The Science Measurement of Student Practice (MSP) is now a computer-based test as well.
Please help us by ensuring that your student is in school for the whole day during their assessment weeks. We appreciate your assistance by not scheduling any appointments, trips or other commitments during this time.

The Second Annual Literacy Council Book Drive to support ESL and literacy education is on and runs through April 26. Do some spring cleaning and send in books that your family is no longer reading! Skills Center Summer School for Rising 9th Graders
Is your student interested in earning high school credit this summer? Trying out a career field for free? Wondering what it would like to be a chef, engineer or medical professional?
Skills Center Summer School offers courses to all Seattle Public Schools students entering 9th – 12th grades in Sept. 2016 with most classes offered mornings or afternoons over four weeks at various Seattle high schools and other locations. "Room Service" by Seattle Public Theater Youth - NEW
Follow what happens as nineteen hungry actors are holed up in a Times Square hotel room with a headstrong producer, trying to find a backer for their new Broadway show while racking up monstrous room service bills. Filled with jokes, pratfalls, fast-paced chatter, and financial chicanery for an evening of non-stop foolery. Originally produced in 1937, and turned into a Marx Brothers movie, “Room Service” is a comedy classic. Ensemble features actors grades 9 – 12.

WISE Chemistry and Math Summer Camps - NEW
WISE camps offer chemistry and math courses in the morning and afternoon in August for students entering grades 3-9 at Newport High School in Bellevue. The science camps are designed to give students hands-on experience with lab equipment and learn basic chemistry. The math camps are designed to excite students about advanced topics with lots hands-on activities. Seattle Arts and Lectures Writers in the Summer Program
Seattle Arts and Lectures announces its first ever summer camp, “Writers in the Summer.” Classes will be open to elementary, middle, and high school students, and will meet for two weeks, Monday-Friday, from July 25- Aug 5 for half day sessions at the School of Visual Concepts in downtown Seattle. Local writers—accomplished poets, novelists, slam performers, and comic writers—will lead classes in a variety of genres. Here are class descriptions and the online registration page.
