Seeking PTSA Financial Review Committee Members - Updated!
Summer Financial Review Committeee - 3 Volunteers Still Needed
Thank you Budget Committee, and one Financial Review Committee volunteers! Three more individuals are needed to serve on a committee to review and audit the PTSA’s financial records after the close of the 2015-2016 fiscal year. The state PTA provides a checklist for committee members to use, and does not expect that members will have an accounting background.
The financial review is expected to take a total of about 3-4 hours and should be performed in July or early August, to be scheduled at the convenience of the committee members. Please contact Treasurer Barbara Vaughey at email@example.com if you are interested in volunteering.

Submit Your Priorities for the Washington State PTA 2016 Legislative Platform!
Every two years, the Washington state PTA prioritizes its legislative agenda based on input from its members. Any PTSA member can submit a proposal. The key dates for this cycle are:
Wednesday, May 18: Title and short description due
Wednesday, June 1: Complete issue submittal form due
Fully funding schools is the current top prioritization, but proposals can be on any number of issues. Come to the 2016 HIMS Science Expo!, Thursday, April 28 - Updated, Tonight!
The HIMS Science Department is excited to announce the 2016 Science Expo the evening of Thursday, April 28. Students have prepared science investigations, designed engineering projects, read nonfiction science books to present, or researched a STEM career. Pizza will be served in the cafeteria from 5:30- 6 PM for participating Hamilton students. View exhibits from 6-7:15 PM in science rooms, the Library and the Commons.
Students eligible for the 2016 Middle School Science & Engineering Fair will be evaluated by grade level teams, and candidates will be announced by Friday, May 6 to go on to present their work at the district science fair on June 2. Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to come and support our students’ hard work!
Please Follow Hamilton Traffic Flow Guidelines - NEW
Parents/guardians dropping off and picking up their students should travel west ONLY on 41st St. (the south side of HIMS) so that students can safely get in or out of their car on the school side of the street. Otherwise traffic gridlock and unsafe conditions for our students and neighbors result.

Does Hamilton Need a School Safety Patrol? - NEW
The school zone around Hamilton is a busy place. There are parents and school buses dropping off or picking up kids, people not part of the school community driving through, and just when you thought it couldn't get any more chaotic, kids are walking and riding their bicycles to and from school. So this begs the question - could Hamilton use a School Safety Patrol?
This summer, AAA Washington will provide free workshops for School Safety Patrol advisors to learn about training, grant opportunities, school patrol success stories, and AAA recognition programs for patrollers.

Free and Reduced Lunch ORCA Card Program - NEW
Students who qualify for the District’s Free and Reduced Lunch Program may now submit parental consent forms (required) to receive free transit passes. This new ORCA card program, funded by the City of Seattle, applies to high school and middle school students who:
Live one to two miles from their assigned school and
Do not currently receive district provided transportation and
Qualify for Free and Reduced Price Lunch
To apply, students or families may pick up a parent consent form and an ORCA card Conditions of Usage Agreement at the main office of their assigned school or online here
Alaskan Way Viaduct Two Week Closure, Plan Ahead for Delays - NEW
The Alaskan Way Viaduct/SR 99 will be closed for approximately two weeks beginning Friday, April 29 to allow Bertha, the tunneling machine, to tunnel beneath the structure. School bus transportation and commute times for nearly all schools will be affected:
SPS bus drivers will begin their days earlier than usual to get to stops on time
Travel time will be added to bus routes directly affected by the closure
Families will be notified directly by a phone call and individual letter if your student’s pick up and/or drop off times will shift

Family Surveys Distributed This Week - NEW
The 2016 Seattle Public Schools Family Survey is being distributed this week by email, with follow-up physical mailings next week to households without an email address on file. The survey window will close on May 20. For questions see the Family Survey FAQ or contact email@example.com
Resolution of HCC Ingraham HS Open Enrollment Assignments - Updated!
There has been some confusion regarding assignment of Highly Capable Cohort (HCC) students to Garfield or Ingraham High School IBX based on student choice, not on space availability. The confusion was reinforced by language on the Advanced Learning website conflicting with that of Admissions. This impacted HCC students who, while guaranteed a seat at Garfield as their default pathway HC school, wanted to attend IBX/HC at Ingraham (which is an option only), but were told they would be waitlisted.
Once this discrepancy was brought to the Advanced Learning office’s attention, the 29 students who submitted Choice Forms to attend Ingraham during the Open Enrollment period, ending March 1, have been moved from the waitlist and enrolled. The affected families are being notified via a letter. The Advanced Learning webpage has been updated to mirror the language in Superintendent’s Procedures 3130SP (Student Assignment).
Update on 2016-2017 Capacity Limits to the Number of Students at Hamilton - NEW
The Seattle Public Schools Board of Directors, in their 4/20/16 Action Report, has approved purchase of portables for Hamilton. The Landmarks Office at the Department of Neighborhoods for the City of Seattle has not approved their use at Hamilton, though. At a follow-up to the General PTSA discussion with Seattle Public Schools Board Director Rick Burke, Assistant Principal Michelle Pickard investigated the occupancy limits at Hamilton as stated by the Fire Department. The Certificate of Occupancy does not list a maximum number of occupants for classrooms or hallways. For the Gymnasium, the maximum occupancy is 1149 people. For the Commons/Dining Hall, the maximum occupancy is 957 people. At the end of 2015, Hamilton had 1,094 kids. The online staff directory lists 88 people for a total number of people in the building of 1,182.
In the Capital Projects Semi-Annual Report, the Seattle Public Schools listed Hamilton as having a “Right Sized Capacity” of 973. That is consistent with the recent numbers from Principal Blish that Hamilton has 43 classrooms, not including the Gym or the stage as a classroom. Therefore, the PTSA has computed that the school has a maximum capacity of 1,075 kids if every classroom averages 25 students and Hamilton were able to arrange schedules in which every classroom is filled each period.

Get your 8th Grader on Board the End-of-Year Celebration Cruise!, Thurs., June 23
Eighth graders will board at the WA Museum of Natural History in South Lake Union and cruise through the locks to Pier 55 on Thursday, June 23! Permission slips were sent home, and are due by June 4. If they are turned in by TOMORROW Friday, April 29 students may choose their bus and who they sit with. The $45 fee covers food, drink, DJ, bus, and boat transportation. PLEASE consider an additional donation to support those who need assistance so that all 8th grader have a chance to go! Congratulations to 8th graders on the end of their final year at Hamilton!
International Schools/Dual Language Immersion Task Force & Community Meetings
The District is putting together a task force to study the impacts, risks and benefits of sustaining and expanding Seattle's International Schools and Dual Language Immersion programs. The Superintendent will use this report, along with other important data, to make recommendations to the School Board for potential changes in the 2017-18 school year.
The task force will include teachers and staff, parents/guardians, and community members who represent the diversity of Seattle Public Schools and can bring an open mind, a passion for student learning, and a willingness to engage in inquiry, meaningful dialogue, and collaboration.

Community outreach meetings will also be held throughout the city. Interpreters will be provided at each site for Spanish, Mandarin, and Japanese, and additional languages as needed.

Skills Center Summer School for Rising 9th Graders
Is your student interested in earning high school credit this summer? Trying out a career field for free? Wondering what it would like to be a chef, engineer or medical professional?
Skills Center Summer School offers courses to all Seattle Public Schools students entering 9th – 12th grades in Sept. 2016 with most classes offered mornings or afternoons over four weeks at various Seattle high schools and other locations. Students are invited to join us for a day of dancing with the Ballard High School Dancers. All participants will learn choreography from BHS Dance Team members and are invited to join us to perform in our finale at the BHS Dance Spring Showcase. Building Healthy Behavior Workshop for Families of Kids Ages 8-14 - NEW
Building Healthy Behaviors is presented in four consecutive workshops. Each workshop is 90 minutes long and provides the information, tools and skills parents, caregivers and family members can immediately put into practice with their children in the home to help make healthy choices and say no to drugs, alcohol and problem behaviors. World Citizen Awards Ceremony, 5/5 - NEW
On May 5th, join the World Affairs Council and keynote speaker Jeff Raikes, former CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Board Chair of the Water for Food Institute, to explore "The Future of Water Worldwide." Mr. Raikes will examine the relationship between water consumption and food production in order to uncover ways to improve water management critical to more-equitably meeting the needs of the world's growing population. This event is part of Global Classroom's 17th Annual World Citizen Essay Contest on water crises worldwide.

UW Math Hour: “Stable Matching,” 5/15 - NEW
In 2012, a Nobel Prize in Economics was given in part for the solution to the following problem: Say we have 100 boys and 100 girls and we want to make them into couples. Everyone makes a list of their ideal partners from 1 to 100 in order of most favorite to least favorite. The question now is whether there is a way to match everyone up so that the matching is “stable.” This means that there is no couple (A,B) in our matching where girl A prefers some other boy to B and boy B prefers some other girl to A. In this Math Hour with Anna Karlin of the UW Computer Science Dept. you will learn about an efficient algorithm for solving this problem and the fascinating properties of stable matchings.

“Room Service” by Seattle Public Theater Youth, 4/29 & 4/30
Follow what happens as nineteen hungry actors are holed up in a Times Square hotel room with a headstrong producer, trying to find a backer for their new Broadway show while racking up monstrous room service bills. Filled with jokes, pratfalls, fast-paced chatter, and financial chicanery for an evening of non-stop foolery. Originally produced in 1937, and turned into a Marx Brothers movie, “Room Service” is a comedy classic. Ensemble features actors grades 9 – 12.
