PLEASEPARTICIPATEINTHEPRINCIPALSEARCH SURVEY

A community survey for parents from Seattle Public Schools has been posted to the HIMS homepage to help gather information to be used by the hiring team. If you are unable to complete the survey online, please stop by the main office at Hamilton to obtain a paper copy.

Please take a few minutes to provide valuable information to the search committee.

This survey will be available through tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 20.

SEEKINGPRINCIPALSEARCHCOMMITTEEMEMBERS

Are you interested in working with the Principal Search Committee this spring?
If so, this is your invitation to submit a letter indicating interest to the Hamilton PTSA. The PTSA Board has convened a small committee of Hamilton parents who will read the applications and choose applicants who represent the best cross-section of Hamilton programs, academic tracks, backgrounds and interests. The applicants who are chosen will be invited to join the Principal Search Committee.

Interview dates are TBD, but we anticipate that there will be one or more interview days to take place in the last two weekends in March at the John Stanford Center. Applicants should be available for both days on both weekends, since we don’t yet know what date(s) will be selected. The district will also likely provide training for selection committee members prior to the interviews.

If you are interested in joining the Principal Search Committee, please email your introduction letter tohims.ptsa.president@gmail.com, or turn it in at the Hamilton Office and ask the office staff to put it in the PTSA mailbox.

Letters of application are due by 10 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19. (NEW DATE ANDTIME!)

In your letter, please be sure to address or include:

  • Your relevant background and contact information
  • Your family association with Hamilton (including grade level, gender, and elementary school)

  • Specific interests or programs that you have experience with in the Hamilton community (i.e., any of the academic programs, music, Special Ed, ESL, athletics, PTSA, etc.)

  • Why you are interested in being on the Search Committee
And any other information that you think would make you a valuable asset for the Search Committee.

Please limit your letter to one page. We also ask that applicants have had a student at Hamilton within the period of 2013-2015, and that they will also have a student at Hamilton in 2015-2016.

For questions or clarification, please contact HIMS PTSA President Lisa Melenyzer at lmelenyzer@gmail.com.

INTERESTINGINBECOMINGA2015-2016 PTSA COMMITTEE MEMBER?

We need committee members to review this fiscal year's financial business and to workshop create a budget for the 2015-16 year. The commitment for each of these committees would be approximately 2-4 hours. If you would be interested in working on either of these committees, please contact Barbara Vaughey, our PTSA Treasurer, at bvaughey@gmail.com.

There will also be other openings on the PTSAcommittee that we are in the process of determining. If you would like further information, please contact Erica Jorgensen, VP of Communications, at HamiltonNews15@gmail.com.

We ♥ Our PTSA Members!

Thanks to all the great support from the Hamilton community, our PTSA has qualified for a Washington State PTA “Sapling Award.” Nice work Hamilton families! This award recognizes local PTAs that enroll at least 75% as many members as there are students in the school. With a total of 776 HIMS PTSA members so far this year, our school is looking good!

If you have any questions about PTSA membership, or if you never received your HIMS PTSA membership card, please contact Elizabeth Carson-Cheng, our Membership Chair, at eli_carson@yahoo.com.

HAMILTON 2014 FALL FUND DRIVE UPDATE – TAX RECEIPTS & CORPORATE MATCHING

Thank you for participating in the Hamilton PTSA 2014 Fall Fund Drive! Together with anticipated corporate matches, your donations have raised just over $90,000! This will enable us to meet our PTSA budget for the year, and will help support the programs and community that we all value here at Hamilton.

Every student, and the entire Hamilton community, will benefit from your generous donations. The PTSA is committed to using these funds in the 2014-2015 academic year, and in the event of a surplus, we will work with Principal Watters to ensure that any funds are re-allocated as necessary to achieve that purpose.

All tax receipt letters were sent in December and January. If you did not receive one, or if you have any questions, please get in touch with Deb Sundblad at dsundblad@comcast.net.

If you work for a company who offers corporate matching, please be sure and submit any necessary paperwork to your company to inform them of your donation and get the process started on the matching funds. We are working diligently to respond to all requests for confirmation as they come our way. Any questions about corporate matching can be directed to Deb Sundblad, VP of Fundraising, at dsundblad@comcast.net, or Barbara Vaughey, Treasurer, at bvaughey@gmail.com.

Principal's Letter

Dear Hamilton International Families,

Last Thursday, more than 100 student leaders from across Seattle Public Schools gathered at Hamilton for the first Middle Level Regional workshop in over 25 years! More than 10 of our middle and K-8 schools sent student leaders to for a 1-day workshop designed to build teams, inspire student leaders to partner in creating welcoming schools and to develop connections between schools.

Our ASB student leaders worked tirelessly with our advisers and the Association of Washington Student Leaders (AWSL) to put on the event. One AWSL staff person pulled me aside just before the day started and said, “Your students are amazing, they have solved every problem before I even realized it existed. They are the best I’ve ever worked with!” Every student, advisor, and AWSL staff I spoke with said it was an amazing day and they look forward to continuing the tradition!

On Friday, over 30 students and three teacher advisors from our La Chispa club joined students from across Puget Sound for a one-day retreat in Shoreline. La Chispa (The Spark) is also sponsored by AWSL with the goal to “ignite a spark and create a flame of focused energy with middle level Latino students in Washington State.” Students build positive connections with Latino high school and college-age role models, learn in a bilingual and biliterate environment and learn leadership skills. Over the past three years our La Chispa club has grown from 5 to over 30 student leaders!

This spring we will begin the process of selecting WEB Leaders for our 6th grade transition program next fall. WEB leaders help orient our incoming students to Hamilton and serve as mentors and advocates for those students as they transition to middle school. Schools across the country that have implemented the WEB program (including several in Seattle) have seen an increase in positive school culture, stronger connections to school, and a decrease in bullying.

Each of the programs would not be possible without the amazing and generous support of our PTSA. Growing student leaders is as important to our community as developing strong scholars. Thank you for your continued support of our student leaders our school is stronger because of your commitment!

Go Hawks!

Cindy Watters

Principal
