MIXING BUSINESS WITH PLEASURE: PTSA Membership Meeting & Volunteer Appreciation Social Recap - NEWWe Appreciate YOU_small.jpg


THANK YOU to all who joined us last night for our final PTSA Membership Meeting of the school year, and a long overdue celebration of Hamilton's many volunteers and helpers! The evening was enjoyed by all, and our thanks to Tutta Bella on Stone Way for their delicious eats, drinks and outstanding service.


THE BUSINESS:

We started the evening by unveiling and voting on the proposed PTSA Budget for the 2016-17 school year, which increased from $95,000 in 2015-16, to $100,000 for the new school year.


Items of note were an increase in New Teacher/Classroom support (in anticipation of additional classes next school year) and increased support for the YMCA after-school HOST program (Hawk Out of School Time).  We eliminated a line item for an Academic Specialist position that will not be continuing next year, and added a line item for Counseling Outreach & Events, to support the many events we do in partnership with our Counseling Department, which this past year included the “Screenagers” showing, Taproot Theater performances for all students, and Mental Health Education Night for parents. Other increases were in PTSA Communications tools and grade-level events.


The budget was approved unanimously, and it should be noted that we are only able to support Hamilton so well thanks to the generosity of our Fall Fund Drive donors! Thanks to all who have given in the past, and who plan to give as they are able next Fall.


We also held elections for next year's PTSA Executive Board Members, which included President, Secretary, Treasurer and VP of Communications (we had no candidates for VP or Fundraising and VP of Events).  Unanimously elected members included:


  • Lisa Rivera Smith, returning as President

  • Claire Burnett, returning as Secretary

  • Zach Rupp, joining the board as Treasurer

  • Anu Jain, joining the board as VP of Communications

 

We also give our heartfelt thanks to the executive members who will be ending their tenures this year – Barbara Vaughey (two years as Treasurer) and Deb Sundblad (two years as VP of Fundraising). Thank you, ladies, for your years of dedicated service to the Hamilton PTSA Board.


Lastly, we approve the addition of a new PTSA Executive Board Member position - Vice President - as a way to attract members who anticipate moving into the President role in a subsequent year. THE PLEASURE:

We ended our evening relaxing and socializing, as we celebrated our wonderful volunteers. Hamilton teachers and staff shared messages of thanks on a banner that was displayed and each volunteer in attendance went home with a $5 Starbucks gift card.


Thanks once more to all who joined us last night, and we look forward to seeing everyone at our next Membership Meeting in the fall.



Teenage Brain Talk for Teens, Could Your Student Stay after Early Dismissal Wednesday, June 1? - NEW

Parents enjoyed Jennifer Kennett’s talk on the "Teenage Brain" at the PTSA Winter Membership Meeting and Hamilton’s middle schoolers could also benefit from this information!

Ms. Kennett is available to do the teen-version of the talk next Wednesday, June 1 which is also a 2-hour Early Dismissal Day.  Students could stay at Hamilton after school gets out at 12:20 PM, attend the talk and then and be ready to be picked up/go home by 2 PM (instead of having to come back for an evening talk).

Update on Seattle Public Schools Funding and Parent-Led Efforts - NEW


From PTSA Legislative Liaison, Sam Bell:

As the school year comes to a close, here’s a summary of where the state currently stands in regards to fully funding the public school system. The legislative session ended with no significant investments made in basic education to meet funding obligations ordered through the McCleary lawsuit. Importantly for the Seattle Public Schools, which are heavily subsidized by local levies, legislators failed to act on the informally-termed “levy cliff,” instead opting to include what they said was a backstop in case the Legislature didn’t act quickly enough in 2017. Section 515 of the supplemental operating budget requires the task force to determine by April 1, 2017 whether the Legislature is on track to meet its obligations regarding teacher compensation and levy reform by April 30 or to introduce legislation that will extend current levy authority for at least one calendar year, with the objective of passing the legislation by April 30. More information can be found on the Washington State PTA blog


If you are interested in getting involved, Washington’s Paramount Duty is a parent-led effort to build a statewide base of grassroots support for closing the education funding gap and fully funding basic education. They are asking parents to do two things right now:

  • Sign their petition to support fully funding education.

  • Visit the Washington’s Paramount Duty website and donate to fund their lobbying efforts.


Neither the Hamilton PTSA, nor the Washington State PTA are associated with Washington’s Paramount Duty, as our organizations do not conduct lobbying, in order to maintain our non-profit tax status. According to Kathryn Hobbs, the Executive Director of the PTA:


Lobbying is defined as an attempt to influence specific legislation, including both legislation that has already been introduced in a legislative body and specific legislative proposals that may align with the mission, vision, and goals of an association, organization or group. WSPTA is absolutely not a lobbying organization, although we do engage in a limited amount of lobbying activity (primarily through our legislative consultant, Marie Sullivan).

WSPTA is an advocacy organization; advocacy is defined as attempting to cause political or social action, using methods such as person-to-person conversations, civil education and discourse, and public information campaigns, with the aim to influence decision makers and the voting public to support general policies that are beneficial to children.

WPD is a lobbying organization because they are a 501c4, and are thus able to ‘further its exempt purposes through lobbying as its sole or primary activity without jeopardizing its exempt status’ (from the IRS rules regarding 501c4s).”


Lastly, the Seattle Times Education Lab is hosting a discussion on Wednesday, June 1, on “How do we fully fund education?” Visit their event page for more info and to RSVP

Freshman Night for Future Roosevelt Roughriders, Tuesday, June 7 - NEW


Incoming 9th graders and their families are cordially invited to come to Roosevelt the evening of Tuesday, June 7 at 6:30 PM for Freshman Night. Please join us to learn more about Roosevelt and to meet many of the staff who are here to support students as well representatives from clubs and sports. HIMS Hawks Roller Rodeo Update – POSTPONED

The HIMS HAWKS ROLLER RODEO originally scheduled for this Friday has been postponed to a to-be-determined date in June.  But keep it on your student’s radar! Students will be invited to come ready to roll with their bikes, scooters, and roller blades. They will get a treat simply for participating! Activities will include a decorating station, practicing fun roller skills, and the opportunity to win more prizes!  Be on the lookout for a rescheduled date, coming soon.


 

Last Chance to Order Yearbooks - This Week!


If you haven’t yet ordered a Yearbook, they will go on sale again for $20 from May 16 -

May 30, and require an order form with a check or cash. Students can get the order form from their homeroom teachers or the main office. To check whether you ordered one at the start of the year, ask the main office or Ms. Smith in room 102.



Congratulations 8th Graders! Promotion Ceremony, Friday, June 24 - NEW


The 8th grade Promotion will be Friday, June 24, the last day of school. It will be from 12-12:45 PM in the Gym. After the ceremony there will be refreshments on the Playtop until 1:20 PM (weather permitting, otherwise in the Commons) provided by our own Hamilton PTSA. In the morning, 8th graders will rehearse and write thank you notes to teachers.

Apply to Join SPS Capacity Planning Task Force - NEW


Seattle Public Schools is creating a Capacity Planning Task Force to examine and prepare a set of recommendations to the Superintendent for the purpose of being prepared for continued demands for future classroom space in our buildings at all levels. Our goal is for the task force to include parent/guardian, family, and community members who represent the diversity of our schools and who can provide valuable insight and perspective regarding the future of facilities for SPS students.

Deadline for applications is June 15, 2016. Here is more information on how to take part



Ice Cream Social and Welcome to Ingraham for the Class of 2020, Wed., June 15

The Ingraham parent group will be sponsoring an Ice Cream Social from 6:15 – 7 PM on Wednesday, June 15 in the Lunchroom. Parents and students are encouraged to attend this fun event. Staff will be available to answer any questions as well as a representative from sports and clubs. You can purchase Ingraham Spirit Gear as well – t-shirts, sweatshirts, flannel pants and lots more! Has Your Hawk Lost a Book?


  • If the lost book belongs to the HIMS Library and your Hawk has looked everywhere, please ask them to bring a middle-school appropriate book, DVD, or CD audiobook to Ms. MacDonald as a donation and ask her to waive the fine

  • If the lost book belongs to your Hawk, your family, or a teacher, please ask library staff to check the Lost ‘n’ Found books in the Library Books Storage Room - we have 3 shelves of books found this school year!

  • If the lost book belongs to the public library, and was brought to HIMS library, these are returned to the Wallingford branch weekly. Check your public library account

The Swing Dance – our final jazz concert of the year – is tonight! Doors open at 6 PM, with dancing and music underway at 6:30 PM. The concert begins at 7, and will go until approximately 8:30. Junior Jazz, Vocal Jazz, and Senior Jazz perform one last time this school year! Hungry after all that dancing? This Weekend: HIMS Chamber Orchestra at Folklife Festival - NEW

Looking for something fun to do with the whole family this weekend? Come and support your Chamber Orchestra as they perform at Folklife beginning at 11 AM Saturday, May 28 at the Mural Ampitheater Stage in the Seattle Center. Our students will be right next to the food! Hope to see you all there.

Attention Sr. Band, Sr. Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra Families – Silverwood is June 3-5 - NEW

Our Senior Band, Senior Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra students will be going to Silverwood in Idaho June 3-5. Students will depart first thing Friday morning, and therefore miss all classes for the day. Students should make arrangements for make-up work with their teachers. The Final Orchestra Concert of 2015-16 is June 9 - NEW

Orchestra students! The very LAST orchestra concert for this school year is coming up June 9 at Lincoln Auditorium. Call time for all students is 6:30 PM. The concert will begin promptly at 7 PM. Adult volunteers are also needed to help staff the event. No experience required, and all roles are designed to ensure you won’t miss your student’s performance.

HIMS Sr. Jazz Takes TOP HONORS at Bellevue High Jazz Festival - NEW

Please join us in congratulating our HIMS Senior Jazz students on their victories at the Bellevue High Jazz Festival two weeks ago! HIMS won first in their division at the beginning of the weekend, then wrapped up the festival by taking the sweepstakes award – beating every other junior high and high school for the weekend’s top honor! This has only happened a couple times in our history. (HIMS Senior Jazz won the award three years ago). We are immensely proud of their performance!

HIMS WINS BIG at Wild Waves Music In the Park - NEW

Congratulations to our music students on a tremendous showing at the annual Wild Waves Music In the Park event! In addition to many wonderful performances, several of our students were recognized. Here’s a complete list of awards:

  • Junior Orchestra took First in their division and First overall for junior high orchestras with a Superior rating

  • Junior Band took First in their division and First overall for junior high bands with an Excellent rating

“Goblin” by SPT Youth - NEW

An alien creature appears in a small office cubicle. Hunted by a party of deadly and enigmatic professionals, she must navigate the cacophony of the city and its denizens, searching for the little girl who created her, and for a way to stay alive. This is a world-premier play by Frank Garland (“Maggie's Diner,” “Boathouse”), his final new work before graduating from the SPT Youth Program. Ensemble features actors grades 8 - 12.

Gateway Summer Academy for 2018 Roosevelt Students - Updated!

For students starting 8th grade THIS FALL, 2016 and destined for Roosevelt High School in 2017.  It is funded by a grant from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Educational Foundation to better prepare students for their final year of middle school.  About 100 Gateway Summer Academies will take place throughout the nation this summer, but this is the only opportunity in Washington State.

Daniel Bagley Elementary: Meet Salva Dut, Protagonist of A Long Walk to Water - NEW

An informal potluck will be held at Daniel Bagley Elementary to meet Salva Dut, protagonist of the inspirational book, A Long Walk to Water. Dut will describe his life as a “lost boy,” and share how perseverance saved his life and helped him achieve his dreams as an adult. Newberry Award-winner Linda Sue Park wrote the book in 2010, inspired by the life story of Dut, a former “Lost Boy of Sudan,” who resettled in Rochester, New York as a refugee, attended college and founded Water for South Sudan. Bagley students’ fundraising for Sudan won WFSS’s Iron Giraffe Award which earned them Dut’s visit!

Ryther’s  Aspiring Youth Summer Camps - NEW

Ryther’s youth summer camps provide a choice of activities, from video production to habitat restoration to art. They are nationally accredited, taught by master’s level counselors and help campers build confidence and connect to new friends with a 4:1 camper ratio. Cultivating Leadership through Creativity and Mindfulness for Teens - NEW

Teens are invited to explore leadership through creativity and mindfulness which foster an atmosphere where ideas are accepted, uncertainty is embraced, and innovative solutions emerge. The course offers  fun games, quirky improv, engaging projects and a chance to make sense out of nonsense and order out of disorder. It is intended for high school aged teenagers (14-19 years old).

Kids with an Edge Math Summer Camps - NEW

Kids with an Edge offers the following Math Summer Camps for Middle Schoolers specifically designed using the Seattle Public School Curriculum: Intro. to Algebra 1, Intro. to Algebra 1­ Advanced, Intro. to High School Geometry, Intro. to Trigonometry. Garfield High School Presents “The Addams Family,” a New Musical Comedy

In a new spin on an old favorite, “The Addams Family” takes to the stage in this new Broadway musical. Middle School Ultimate Frisbee Tournament

UpDawg is a co-ed ultimate frisbee tournament for middle schoolers hosted by the UW Ultimate Frisbee team. The tournament emphasizes fun, socializing, meeting new players, and coming together to celebrate spirited play. There will also be a small plug about the importance and opportunities of college.
