Hamilton’s Got Talent

 

Reflections submissions are in! Twenty eight students submitted a total of 32 works in a variety of genres—music, visual art, photography, literature and film. A big thank you to Mr. Serpe and Ms. McLaren for supporting Reflections in your art and international arts classrooms! We received a number of pieces from these classes, as well as a handful of independently submitted works. The submissions are now being judged by working artists in the respective genres. Judging is done “blind,” without knowledge of the students’ names. According to PTA contest rules, 12 of these wonderful works will be selected for advancement to the citywide contest. Advancing works will be announced byDecember 1. In the meantime, we’re working on creative a virtual gallery for viewing all of the works submitted. More info coming soon!

 


 

Legislative Update

After last week’s election, I -1351 (the initiative to reduce class sizes) is passing with more than 50 percent of the vote.

Initiative 1351 will set lower class sizes at every grade level. It is uncertain what the timing will be for the initiative to be enacted as the state needs to figure out how to pay for more teachers, other school staff, and classrooms. State financial experts are estimating the cost will be about $2 billion more a year once class size reduction is in place.

Those costs are on top of another $2 billion a year the Legislature is already seeking for education reform under theMcClearystate Supreme Court decision.

In the 2012McClearydecision, the state Supreme Court ruled that lawmakers are not meeting their constitutional responsibility to fully pay for basic education and balance the education budget. The court gave the Legislature until the 2017-18 school year to fix the problem, but significant progress will need to be made when the Legislature convenes the second week of January for the 2015 legislative session where they will address education funding and other budget issues.

Volunteering at Hamilton

We welcome volunteers at Hamilton! Volunteering is a GREAT way to support your student and connect with the Hamilton community.If you plan to volunteer at Hamilton this year AND work directly with students(chaperoning, working with students in the classroom or on a school-sponsored event), please complete the following AND return all forms to Hamilton’s front office.

Please note that the District recentlyadopted (Sept. 29, 2014) new field trip procedures, see below.Safety—yours and that of our students--is of paramount importance.

1.Volunteer Screening Form: Print and completeeachschool year(return with a copy of photo ID, a driver’s license is great.)This form is also on the HIMS website, Forms and FAQ section.Volunteers workingdirectly with studentsMUST be screened through Washington State Patrol’s Washington Access to Criminal History (WATCH) program--standard practice with agencies and organizations that serve children, youth and vulnerable adult populations.

2.Watch the district video: Adult SexualMisconduct Prevention Course foundhere. Once you complete the course, you will receive an online certificate to either email to the volunteer coordinator or to print out and bring to the front office.This is a one-time requirement; you will not need to watch the video in the future.

3.Read and complete the signature page of theSPS District Volunteer Handbook.

YMCA HOST (Hawk Out of School Time)

PE Waiver Information

If your child is participating in an athletic HOST class, please note that the YMCA will be writing and submitting a letter directly to the school registrar. This letter will include the HOST class that they are in and the number of hours they have received. Copies of your students letter will be available upon request. Please contact the HOST office via email if you have any questions about the HOST PE Waiver process.

 

Winter/Spring HOST Enrollment

HOST Winter/Spring Enrollment will begin on January 9that 2:30pm. Please be on the look-out for more information on the Hamilton website.

High School/Private School Application Process for the 2015-2016 School Year

 

The High School/Private School application process has started for many Private Educational Institutions in Seattle. Please note that in order for your request to be completed, you need to submit the following items together, to Ms. Peila in Rm 105C.

 

All application requests are due NO LATER than December 1st 2014 (even though the application school may accept them through the start of January) to insure timely mailing prior to HIMS holiday break.

 

* Application form completed for each school with signature from parent/guardian

 

* One (1) 12” x 9 “ self-addressed manila envelope with four (4) stamps affixed on it PER request. Please use YOUR address as the return address due to the fact that many are mailed right before the Holiday break. If the envelope is returned to you, do not open it (the receiving school will not accept an opened envelope) and hand deliver to the school in question.

 

* The teacher recommendation form must be distributed to the teacher separately, no later than November 15th, please include a self-addressed envelope; items 2 and 4 are mailed separately.

 

Information included in the packet will be:

Current progress report

Last two (2) years of report cards, if available

Historical Grades and Cumulative Info reports

MSP and MAP scores from the last year, if available

Incident report – if applicable

Attendance record

 

The receiving school will request final grades if necessary. A follow up is done in May/June for all accepted applicants. Comprehensive list of applicants and schools they were completed for, are kept for three (3) years.

 

SPECIAL NOTE: Lakeside has a two (2) piece process, you MUST go online and submit the electronic information (Ms. Peila is HIMS contact person) form AS WELL as submit a request form following steps 1-4 listed above.

This week's letter comes from Assistant Principal Tipton Blish

Dear HIMS Families,

 

The Common Core State Standards are here at Hamilton. It is not as if they weren’t here. Indeed, our teachers have been working with the standards for a few years now; they became the state standards in 2011. Undoubtedly you have heard and read much about them; they are the subject of political quarrel and they are in the news (All Things Considered is running stories this week). Three years ago teachers were introduced to the standards, and over the previous two school years the standards have been the focus of much of their professional development—and it’s not only teachers in math and reading/writing; all teachers have been getting training, and teachers’ professional organizations have been aligning subject specific standards to the Common Core including world languages, visual and performing arts, and physical education.

This year, though, the standards are in full fruition. At Hamilton students are seeing a marked shift in the classroom, and in our administrative learning walks we are noticing the difference. There are subtle shifts: A lab report, for example, may have been tweaked slightly so it emphasizes that students need to make scientific claims about their exploration that are based on evidence. Or the reading materials that students are seeing may ask them to look for implied meaning. But we, and students, are seeing clear and obvious changes in the classroom. We see teachers teaching students how to speak in an academic setting, how to listen and respond in an academic setting, and it is resulting in classroom discussions in which students are carefully considering the questions and claims of their peers, responding thoughtfully, and ensuring that every voice in the room is heard. In their math classes, students are not only having to work through problems. They explain the concept that supports the technique they deploy to unravel what’s in front of them. This week I saw 7th graders delivering eloquent arguments in speech form. They were being assessed by the evidence they used to support their claims and beliefs, as well as the pacing of their delivery, and quality of their voice.
Much of this work stems from teachers applying their professional learning in the team work that is one of the core emphases at Hamilton this year. It’s very exciting for us to see the execution of this work as we travel across the school building popping into classroom after classroom. Some of these changes are not as visible to students as they are to us. But please engage your student about the work they are doing in their classes and what they are learning as they move into the second quarter.
