Hamilton PTSA 2016 Fall Fund Drive! (10% of Families Have Given)

The Hamilton PTSA 2016 Fall Fund Drive continues thru November and we are grateful for generous gifts from 91 families, so far.  Remember that our goal is 50% participation this year!

HIMS PTSA fundraising goes this academic year towards classroom supplies, sports uniforms, student clubs, social events like PI night, library books, costumes and props for expanding the drama program, teacher professional development, student scholarships, tech support for school computers, and dozens more programs.

The PTSA’s budgeted fundraising goal for 2016–2017 is $100,000.  Join the 10% who have already given and make a gift at any level in support of the programs and community that enrich every student’s experience at Hamilton.

Principal’s Letter

Dear Hamilton International Families,

I am compelled to start with this. I moved out of the U.S. on my second birthday and spent the next 12 years growing up far from American televised sports. My parents are from Indiana and Chicago, where we would spend a month each summer with my grandparents. Thus, yes, it's true, I nearly hit my head on the ceiling, my voice got caught in my throat, and my tear ducts opened last night.

Cubs win! Cubs win! Holy cow, the Cubs win!

Personally, it was a great joy to share the tension and elation with my daughters (although I would very much like to have been with my godfather, who grew up with my mom and who swore [in all ways] off the Cubs "for life" in 1984, 1989, and "this time I'm not kidding" in 2003). My 5th grader has taken the Seahawks Super Bowl victory and turned herself into an American sports fan. Didn't see that coming. Even my 3rd grader, who would just as soon build stuff with magnetic tiles or Legos, sensed the emotion and watched last night.

The Cubs are managed by a quirky, master motivator, who in my deeply amateur view made some bizarre moves over the last few games. However, he is a master of capturing in pithy quotes an attitude that he wants his team to embrace.

Among them, "the process is fearless." This attitude is counter to much of what we hear are the critical components of teaching and learning: that we start with the outcome; we emphasize; we plan to it; we communicate it clearly; and we measure our progress toward it. What Maddon stresses is the details of the moment, not worrying or managing toward the outcome, because it doesn't do anybody any good. Perhaps it doesn't transfer that well to school where our outcomes can seem more nuanced than a win or a loss. Yet, I think of it as a well-planned lesson in which each activity and assignment is where learning happens and that learning leads to the outcome we deemed essential.

One last Maddon saying: "Never let the pressure exceed the pleasure." We think about what underpins this statement a lot at Hamilton, where too many students tell us that they feel a pressure to succeed and compete. Not only do we find that troubling—learning should not be competitive, nor should it be a race to "win"—but feeling stressed, anxious, or under pressure directly affects our ability to learn. Additionally, Maddon is both coaching us away from pressure and toward pleasure. The Cubs were expected to win (can you believe that?), and they didn't hide from that, but they appeared to enjoy what they were doing. And Maddon did a lot to back up that statement. We would do well (and we do in many instances) to ensure that Hamilton students' pleasure exceeds their pressure.

NEW★ SPS Architectural Design Meetings

Architects base school designs on a predefined set of guidelines that set space requirements for elementary, middle, and high schools to create the best schools possible. With the new design process, each school has more flexibility in adapting the design to fit the needs of its learning community.

SPS will present three community meetings on “Educational Specifications Design Standards” for high schools. District staff will share information and ask for input. Details below.

Meetings will take place:

  • Wed., Nov. 9, 7–8:30 pm at the Rainier Beach High School Performing Arts Center (8815 Seward Park S). Interpreters present: Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese. Chinese, Amharic and Tigrigna.

  • Thurs., Nov. 10, 7–8:30 pm. In the Ingraham High School Library (1819 N 135th St.). Interpreters present: Spanish, Somali and Vietnamese.

  • Tues., Nov. 15, 7–8:30 pm. In the Lincoln High School auditorium (4400 Interlake Ave. N). Interpreters present: Spanish, Somali and Vietnamese.


Private School Referral Procedure

Families applying to private schools, please click here for information on how to ensure that Hamilton can accommodate your applications. When setting up your Ravenna Solutions account, you must name Elizabeth Peila as delegate for the Common Record Request Form 2016–2017 and for the School Administrator Form 2016–2017 (if required). You must also print and sign these forms and return them to Ms. Peila. If you have already set up your account, please sign back in and make these corrections so that your child’s records can be submitted to the private schools of your choice by the December 1 deadline.

SPS Budget Work Session

Thurs., Nov. 3, 6–8 pm in the South Shore K–8 cafeteria (4800 S Henderson St.)

This meeting will provide an overview of the District’s budget and planning process as well as an opportunity for our families to make recommendations to the District's Leadership Team and School Board regarding what their ideas would be if the District receives additional funds or has funding reductions that affect the 2017–18 school year.

Students participating in in two, year-long electives must submit a PE waiver form no later than Dec. 1. Waiver documents will be accepted in the office starting Oct. 10. Vocal Jazz Goes to Camp Burton Saturday

The Vocal Jazz students will be going to Camp Burton for their overnight retreat Saturday morning. Details were sent out in email. If you did not receive the email, please contact contact Ms. Babbitt ASAP. Thank you.

Calling all volunteers (especially concert crew!)

We have a variety of volunteer roles ranging from a couple hours to ongoing roles. We have a special need for those interested in helping us with concert equipment. Please go to https://fomahi.membershiptoolkit.com/volunteer to see how you can help! We have an urgent need for the following roles:

  • Graphic designer (one-time project): Our orchestra will be playing a special event in the near future. Help us make it extra special by designing our program.

  • Concert Operations (Jazz): Help us get mics and other equipment set up on jazz concert nights.

  • Concert Coordinator (Jazz): Help us with other logistics related to Jazz concerts.

  • Audio Recorder (Choir): We need help taping our choir concerts. We have the equipment, we just need you!

  • Bake Sale Coordinator (Jazz): Help us organize the bake sale during our upcoming Jazz concert.

Concert season is coming! Do you have your attire?

The latest concert attire information can be found in the student section of the FOMAHI website. Please review it and ensure you are ready for concert season! Note that Vocal Jazz students and Junior Jazz participants are required to purchase t-shirts for concerts. We will be using the same style shirt as last year, so, if your tee still fits, you are good to go. If you need to purchase a tee, please go to http://www.fomahi.org.

It’s Jazz Nutcracker Time!

HOST After-School Programs

NEW★ HOST Fall and Winter Dates Reminder

We are halfway through our fall HOST programs! Students have been doing a great job! As a reminder, HOST classes run until Dec. 8. There is no HOST on Nov. 16 and Nov. 23.

HOST winter registration begins on Fri., Jan. 13 at 6:30 pm. Winter class offerings will be available on Wed., Jan. 11 at 6:30 pm.  

If you have any new ideas for HOST classes please reach out to the YMCA no later than Dec. 2.

NEW★ Hamilton Lego Robotics Club Needs a Volunteer

We are currently in need of a volunteer to help run our Hamilton Lego Robotics Club.  

We have students from the Roosevelt Robotics that would like to come to Hamilton to teach and mentor a group of our Hamilton students. We need someone who will supervise, learn about the Lego Robotics program, and help coordinate with the YMCA regarding logistics of the Lego Robotics competition in December. The volunteers from Roosevelt will be running point and will come prepped and ready to teach!

Hamilton Club members will be doing the FLL league program, which comes with a curriculum,  supplies, and challenges for a team of ten students. (More information on the FLL league is available at: http://firstwa.org/Programs-Events/FIRST-LEGO-League.)

This class will be held Thursdays from 3:30–5 pm. Anyone wishing to volunteer will need to fill out a YMCA volunteer form.

Friends of Robert Eagle Staff Middle School

If your child is slated to go to Robert Eagle Staff Middle School next year, please consider joining the Friends of Eagle Staff Middle School Facebook group. The organizers would like to start a PTA this year so members can start passive fundraising and have a running start in the Fall. The music, sports, drama, library, special ed programs, etc will all need support.

As SPS wrestles with the capacity issues, the Eagle Staff MS boundary is in flux, too. The following elementary schools and programs were to feed into Robert Eagle Staff Middle School:

  • Broadview-Thomson K-8 (as a comprehensive middle school option)

  • Cascadia

  • Daniel Bagley

  • Greenwood

  • Licton Springs K-8 to be co-housed in the Eagle Staff MS building

  • Northgate

  • Olympic View

  • HCC Middle School Students from the Whitman and Robert Eagle Staff draw areas (currently geo-split with HCC students now attending Hamilton Middle School)

Depending on how the boundaries shake out, Robert Eagle Staff Middle School could pick up students from other elementary schools as well.

Seattle JazzED Now Enrolling

Placement Days are Sat., Nov. 19 or Sun., Nov. 20

The award-winning Seattle JazzED Big Band Ensembles are now enrolling kids in grades 6–12, at every skill level. Weekend rehearsals run January through May 2017. Work with professional musicians and educators like Clarence Acox, Darin Faul, Deb Schaaf, and many more. All ensembles perform. Top ensembles travel to New York in the spring! Scholarships are easy to get and payment plans are available to every family.
