HAMILTON AND SPS NEWS

Changes to SPS Student Assignment Plan in the Works
Last Friday, Seattle Public Schools released a proposal of changes to the Student Assignment Plan, which is a roadmap for how the district sorts SPS students into its 97 schools, and how students’ academic needs and families’ open enrollment applications weigh into that process.  The changes were to be voted on at last night's SPS Board Meeting, but on Tuesday the item was removed from the meeting agenda, and postponed to the Nov. 18 board meeting. According to a post on the SPS website, this was done "to allow for additional understanding and feedback from our many stakeholders."

Read the proposed (red-lined) Student Assignment Plan here:
http://www.seattleschools.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_543/File/District/Departments/School%20Board/15-16agendas/110415agenda/20151104_Action_Report_Student_Assign_Plan_Packet.pdf

Families are encouraged to email the school board with comments and concerns: schoolboard@seattleschools.org

Reflections Art Contest Submission Results

Thanks to everyone who entered the Reflections art contest this year. A big thanks to Mr. Serpe and Ms. McLaren for creating an assignment around the contest, this certainly helped boost our numbers.

The Hamilton students submitted 68 entries in five different categories. We will announce the HIMS winners after the school-level judging is finished and we know which 14 pieces will be submitted to the Local Level on November 23rd. The entries that were not selected to move on will be returned to the students at school before the Thanksgiving Break.

Documentary:  2e: Twice Exceptional

At our upcoming November meeting, Monday November 9, 2015, 7:30PM, at the Lincoln High School library in Wallingford, we will be airing the new documentary film 2e: Twice Exceptional by Tom Ropelewski.

2e: Twice Exceptional follows the personal journeys of a unique group of high school students in Los Angeles who have been identified as “twice exceptional” – gifted or highly gifted individuals with learning disabilities or differences. They are geniuses, mavericks and dreamers – Malcolm Gladwell’s budding “outliers.”

People are welcome to come at 7 if they want a few minutes to connect with others —the film will begin at 7:30 PM. It is about an hour long, which should give us time to share our ideas about it afterward.

If you are planning to come please send me a email to that effect--that will help me know how many chairs to round up.

PTSA NEWS

HAMILTON 2015 FALL FUND DRIVE UPDATE

We are at the midpoint of the Hamilton PTSA 2015 Fall Fund Drive, and we are approximately a third of the way towards our goal.  Thank you for your generous donations so far!  Are you wondering how the 2015-2016 PTSA budget is different from last year’s budget?  Here are some highlights of what’s new this year:

•                Increase in funding for New Teacher/Classroom Support and Professional Development, ensuring that our wonderful teachers have the resources they need

•                Funding for the new Academic Intervention Specialist, helping to identify students who might need a little extra support

To provide funding for these important items and the rest of the PTSA budget, our fundraising goal for 2015-2016 is $95,000.  Please consider making a gift during the Fall Fund Drive to support the programs and community that are integral to your student’s experience at Hamilton.   Every donation helps us towards the goal, and is appreciated, no matter the amount!   Donating is easy and just takes a minute:

•         DONATIONS BY CHECK can be turned in to the Hamilton office by November 25.

•         ONLINE DONATIONS can be made at https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/gohawks

•         RECURRING DONATIONS can also be made online, and are a great way to stretch your donation over smaller payments.

•         PLEDGES for donations are welcome!  If you would like to make a donation at a later date, just let us know!

THANK YOU for your support of our kids!  If you have any questions about the Fall Fund Drive, please contact VP of Fundraising, Deb Sundblad at dsundblad@comcast.net.

Want to raise money for a good cause at an event you already plan to attend? Follow the link below to donate your baked goods and/or your time to help make the FOMAHI Jazz Night Bake Sale a success. We need baked goods and people to help out with the sale between 6 – 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 in the HIMS Commons. Sign up now at: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0e4ba5ac2da46-jazz if you plan to help out. Hope to see you there! – Katie & Jill

PE waivers are due by Dec. 1

The school district requires all students to get 60 hours of physical activity (one semester of PE) per school year. If you have a student who has chosen to take multiple arts/language classes in lieu of PE you MUST fill out a waiver and have it approved by December 1. PE waivers are also available for religious and medical reasons. (NOTE: PE waivers are not handled by FOMAHI. However, our music students may be impacted by the rule.)

The Orchestra is seeking one cello (loan or donation) – can you help?

Do you have a ¾- or full-sized cello collecting dust at home? Would you consider loaning or donating your cello to Cadet Orchestra! We have a record-breaking 21-cello players in our Cadet Orchestra! After our initial scramble for extra cellos, we are now just ONE cello away from having each student having their own cello to use during daily class rehearsals. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you at our first concert on Dec. 3! For more info, contact: Mika Armaly, Orchestra Director (mtarmaly@seattleschools.org).

Vocal Jazz needs a trip coordinator for Lionel Hampton

The Vocal Jazz students will be going to the annual Lionel Hampton event in February. While that might seem a long way away, we need a coordinator to begin working on the details as soon as possible. If you are interested in helping, please contact Ms. Babbitt.
