Dear Hamilton International Families,
Welcome to the first week of school. This is a dusty letter. The dust is settling. The first week of school is our very first chance to build the relationships that are the critical foundation for a year of learning. These happen at all levels; I think primarily of teachers and students, and you are probably hearing (ask if you’re not) about activities that teachers have designed to get to know their students, for students to know their classmates, and, of course, for students to know their teachers. As a school, we’ve been emphasizing all the ways in which we interact with others during the school day and what our expectations are—in class, in the hallways, at lunch, etc.
There is also a lot of dust created by the sheer number of students we welcomed this week. It’s meant that teachers have had to move classrooms, share a classroom during the day. And as you have heard we have been adding to our staff up until the last minutes and beyond. We’re very fortunate to have hired Annie Graham in our language arts and social studies department—she’s teaching …
And then there’s the literal dust, which is still on the sills and doorways and other places in our portable classrooms, which were certified for occupancy on the Saturday of the Labor Day holiday. We’re glad to have the classrooms, and our four teachers there did extraordinary work getting their rooms set up for teaching. But this can feel a little like building the airplane while it’s in the air – however, those teachers have importantly built rich curriculum that is really the most important work.
It’s not too early to ask questions of your students about their classes and what they’re learning and will learn. There’s no need to let those conversations get … ummm … dusty.

NEW 6th Grade Parents Orientation and All-School Curriculum Night
Orientation: Thursday, Oct. 6 from 6–6:30pm
Curriculum Night: Thursday, Oct. 6 from 6:30–8:30
Come hear about what’s in store for your students this school year! Both Orientation and Curriculum events are parents only.
Dropoff and Pickup Directions
Parents/guardians dropping off and picking up their students should travel west only on 41st St. (the south side of HIMS) so that students can safely get in or out of their car on the school side of the street. Otherwise traffic gridlock and unsafe conditions for our students and neighbors result. Please refer to the HIMS traffic flow map as well as the school rule for dropoff and pickup.
Calling All Guest Speakers!
Hamilton International Middle School is looking for community members to speak at 2016–17 HIMS Talks. HIMS Talks are student and community member led talks on topics that speakers are passionate about. The guiding principles behind HIMS Talks are that they have personal and global connections that can be tied to Hamilton middle school students. The basic tenets is to broaden perspectives, cultivate global awareness, and connect community. Talks should be 10 minutes long with a 10 minute Q&A period. They will take place during homeroom (1:00–1:30pm) monthly and are open to all students at all grade levels. If interested and to receive additional information, please send your contact info to Dana Radcliffe (email@example.com) and Brandon Severance (firstname.lastname@example.org). Thanks, gracias, and arigato!

Music & Art
It’s Time to Register Your Music Student with FOMAHI!
77% of Hamilton students participate in our award-winning music program, but the school district funds less than 30% of related expenses! We’re the Friends of Music at Hamilton International (FOMAHI), a 100% volunteer organization that fundraises for—and supports—the school’s music program. Throughout the year, we license sheet music, pay for instrument tuning and repairs, subsidize out-of-state trips to major competitions, and provide scholarships to students in need. Please register your music student(s) today at www.fomahi.org. There is a $25 enrichment fee per student.
Sports and HOST After-School Programs
Information about after school Fall Sports and after school HOST classes will be available soon. The Fall Sports is Girls Soccer and Ultimate Frisbee. Students trying out for these sports will need an athletic physical prior to tryouts. Students who participated in after school sports last year, please check with Ms. De la Cruz in the office to see if your physical is still current. Physical forms are available in the main office.
