★ Tonight Winter PTSA Membership Meeting and Guest Speaker

    Hamilton Families,

At Thursday's PTSA Membership Meeting, we will take care of a little bit of business:
    - approval of October meeting minutes
    - budget report
    - election of VP of Events
    - approval of standing rules

and then move into the main event, where we have an exciting speaker, fellow Hamilton parent, Jo Langford, M.A., here to talk with us about technology and sexuality with regard to recent events at Hamilton.

Jo Langford uses two decades of experience working with t/weens to give us the information we need to connect with our child/ren—to help them make informed decisions and to have the tools to go at sexuality, relationships and growing up with technology—with a sense of confidence and seriousness, having fun along the way while doing as little harm to themselves and their peers as possible. Followed by Q&A and conversation.

    Hope to see you there!

Also coming up, First Friday Parent Coffee with free Top Pot doughnuts, featuring the Hamilton counseling department; Friday, March 1, drop-off to 9:45, Hamilton library

     Letter from the Principal

    Hamilton PTSA

★ NEW Letter from Principal Manza

    Dear Hamilton Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed a restful mid-winter break.  I enjoyed some time off during the break, but I am thrilled to be back at school.  The staff and students are happy to be back in the routine of teaching and learning without being interrupted by the weather.  I received our budget and staffing allocations for the 2019-2020 school year yesterday afternoon.  Next year we will be facing significant budget cuts.  I can tell you that we are losing our full-time house administrator position (loss of 1.0 FTE), we are only being allocated funds to support a half-time librarian position (loss of .5 FTE), and we are losing a funding allocation that we have previously used to augment support staff including nursing and counseling (loss of .5 FTE).  Over the next few weeks, I will be working with the Building Leadership Team and the staff to develop our budget and deal with the current reductions.  We will do the best we can to maximize our resources in partnership with the PTSA and continue to provide an outstanding educational experience for all students.

    End of Year Activities Update:
The end of the school year has been extended to Thursday, June 27.  Our administrative team is taking that into account as we look to potentially adjust the year end grade level field trips. However, the 8th grade promotion will still be held on Thursday, June 20.  We will communicate any adjusted year end grade level field trip dates moving forward.

    Go Hawks!

    Lunchroom Volunteers
Principal Manza would love some volunteer help in the lunchroom.  This isn't an enforcement role--it gives the curious of us of a chance to get to see middle schoolers enjoying each other in the middle of the day!  No need to stay for all (3) lunch periods, come when you can.  Click for details and to sign up:  Signup Genius

    Math Volunteers
Might you be able to tutor HIMS kids in math during the school day? We have a need for this during “Hawk Time” – our Advisory period on M, Th, F from 2:15-2:50. What this would look like is you would help 1-3 students at a time with their math homework, quiz corrections, or general catch-up in one of the flex spaces. Mr. Bundy and Ms. Barker would make sure you are supplied with great kids who need help and are ready to receive it. We would also make sure you are equipped with what you need to know to work effectively.

If you could contribute to our community in this way it would be so amazing because you would be pitching in on pursuing important school-wide goals around Eliminating Opportunity Gaps…but more to the point, you would be helping students achieve success in math. Please contact Mr. Bundy at ssbundy@seattleschools.org if you are interested, and thanks! - Seth Bundy

★ Updated Track Coach Still Needed!

For a number of years, Hamilton has had an excellent track program.  Despite a changing of the guard at the head coaching position, we’d like to continue this speedy tradition with our Hamilton harriers.  So, if you or anyone you know might be interested in helping out, or potentially even serving as head coach for this largest of Hamilton athletic teams, please contact Mr. D. Evans. dsevans@seattleschools.org

           The season:

      • runs roughly from late March - late May
      • involves about 100 of our student-athletes
      • is co-ed, for 6th, 7th and 8th graders
      • has two practices per week (T/Th)
      • has five Saturday meets
      • is loads of fun!

Lincoln High School Band and Orchestra Auditions

Attention all band and orchestra students who will be attending Lincoln High School.  Auditions are being scheduled now in March for students.  Link here.

      Lincoln High School Orchestra Update

Welcome to Ms. Vicky Greenbaum, Lincoln High School's new orchestra teacher.  From Ms. Greenbaum:

Lincoln High School is gearing up for a tremendous start in Sept 2019, and they’ve asked me to direct the orchestras there! We’re hoping to interest incoming 9th graders from our best schools to audition. The music department is shaping up to be awesome and I am excited. We on the music team want to offer zesty, excellent music-making and instruction at a high level. We love what we do, and we are eager to work with incoming students from area schools, including Hamilton!

Here's a link to the auditions page:

      http://performingarts4lincoln.weebly.com/auditions.html

Families can also arrange an audition at another time if they reach out to me at vigreenbaum@seattleschools.org

If someone  doesn't want to audition, they can opt in to the non-auditioned orchestra, but I have set up the auditions page with some very accessible repertoire, and of course the advanced kids can bring their higher-level pieces or concerti for violin, viola, cello or bass.

I am happy to answer any questions!

       Here are some FAQs answers:

      • plenty of room at Lincoln so entering grade 9 and 10 students can opt in with ease
      • plans afoot for full symphony orchestra
      • chamber music opportunities, with coaching for Solo and Ensemble fest
      • advanced, interesting repertoire, plus enticing intermediate rep for the second orchestra
      • concerto and solo opportunities!

★ NEW  Trip Coordinator for Wild Waves

We are still in need of a trip coordinator for the Wild Waves trip June 8 for Junior Band, Junior Orchestra, Junior Jazz, and Treble Choir.  Please help out or the trip is in jeopardy.  Please contact Christine Holden at tomchristinaholden@comcast.net

★ NEW  FOMAHI Board Members needed for 2019-2020

Some of your friendly FOMAHI Board members will be moving on next year, and your help is needed to keep our great Hamilton Music booster club and subsequently the Hamilton Music program functioning at the top level.  Thanks to the organization of FOMAHI, the Hamilton music program is able to provide the students opportunities, learning, and instruments that would not be otherwise available. This program is truly unique.  But it needs parent volunteers to function.  Believe it or not, FOMAHI meetings are actually entertaining (ever spent an hour with Mr. Harshman???), and the duties not onerous.  The current board member can break you in.

      Positions needed for next year:

      • Orchestra co-president
      • Choir co-president
      • Communications chair
      • After school activity coordinator

Please contact Christine Holden at tomchristinaholden@comcast.net, or email FOMAHIhelp@gmail.com for more information.
