    ★ NEW
Tell your legislators to release levy funds! Write or call today

    Dear Hamilton parents,

As you know Seattle voters just renewed two levies that are desperately needed to support our schools. But it’s not over yet.

Now the state legislature must give their stamp of approval so that Seattle can collect the money and put it where it needs to go.

But here’s more bad news. Those levies don’t fully fund our schools. Not even close. As you saw from Principal Manza’s recent letter, Hamilton is losing staff because the state *still* doesn’t fully fund education.

Below, is a sample email, along with clear instructions for reaching your Senator and Representatives today.

    Lorelei Goodyear and Joanna Grist
    Hamilton PTSA Legislative Liaisons

    An example email to legislators:

    Dear Senator/Representative:

I live in your district, have two children at Hamilton Middle School, and am very concerned about the insufficient funding for schools in our district. Our schools were underfunded before the so-called McCleary fix, and now, even though the state has supposedly fully funded education, the total amount of funding has actually gone down because the new state funding is not enough to replace the local levy funds that we are no longer allowed to collect. Even with the levy funds we have traditionally collected, schools like mine have PTAs that raise $100K or more per year to fill the gap and provide adequate basic education for our kids, and schools in less wealthy neighborhoods that can't raise that much just go without. Without the levy funds, we will have to make some very hard decisions about which basic services to give up. I urge you to fully fund counselors, librarians, nurses, social workers, and special education. Please vote to release the levy funds approved by Seattle voters.

    ★ NEW Principal Dorian Manza

    Dear Hamilton Families,

Below you will find details about our upcoming assembly concerning internet safety for our

Internet Safety Assembly on Thursday, March 21:

    • Social media/online gaming

Stefanie worked with the Seattle Police Department in the high-risk victim unit and internet crimes against children for 7 years. She has been doing community outreach for schools and parent groups for almost 10 years surrounding internet safety. Ms. Thomas has presented all over the Seattle School District for years as well as most of the Eastside schools, up north in the Everett School District and down to the Tacoma School District. World Languages - Options for Earning High School Credits

Students have several options for earning high school world language credits to satisfy the new high school graduation requirements (and the 2 credit requirement for admission to a 4-year college). Students can earn 1-2 seat-time credits in middle school, or they can test for 1-4 World Language Competency-Based Credits, starting in 8th grade. We want to make sure that middle and high schools provide accurate information to families about what students need to do to get those credits recorded on their transcripts and appropriate placement in high school language courses.

Please share this link with families: Earning High School World Language Credits.

    Lunchroom Volunteers
Principal Manza would love some volunteer help in the lunchroom.  This isn't an enforcement role--it gives the curious of us of a chance to get to see middle schoolers enjoying each other in the middle of the day!  No need to stay for all (3) lunch periods, come when you can.  Click for details and to sign up:  Signup Genius

    Math Volunteers
Might you be able to tutor HIMS kids in math during the school day? We have a need for this during “Hawk Time” – our Advisory period on M, Th, F from 2:15-2:50. What this would look like is you would help 1-3 students at a time with their math homework, quiz corrections, or general catch-up in one of the flex spaces. Mr. Bundy and Ms. Barker would make sure you are supplied with great kids who need help and are ready to receive it. We would also make sure you are equipped with what you need to know to work effectively.

If you could contribute to our community in this way it would be so amazing because you would be pitching in on pursuing important school-wide goals around Eliminating Opportunity Gaps…but more to the point, you would be helping students achieve success in math. Please contact Mr. Bundy at if you are interested, and thanks! - Seth Bundy

    Music-a-thon a HUGE Success!

On Thursday, February 28, Hamilton Music Students joined forces to raise over $37,500 (and counting) and create 11+ hours of continuous music!

You can still donate online or have your child turn in their envelop to their music director!

Congratulations to 1st Period Chamber/Senior Orchestra, 6th period Intermediate Band (Harshman) and 2nd period Concert Choir for winning the class participation contests! Each of these classes enjoyed a donut/pizza party! Special kudos to 6th period Intermediate Band - they had 100% class participation!

Many, many thanks to you and your students for gathering donations; to the dedicated student musicians who worked hard to fill every minute of Thursday with music (even the passing periods!); to everyone who participated in or attended the fantastic Young Musicians Concert; to the music teachers for organizing all the afterschool music and for the amazing job they do every day with our students; and to the many volunteers who helped make the Music-a-thon run smoothly. Hamilton Kids Return from Oaxaca & A Few Spots Left in Summer Oaxaca Trips

Hamilton kids have so many stories to tell about our transformative trip to Oaxaca over winter break. Ask them to talk about horseback riding through cactus-studded hills, ziplining over the Sierra Norte, standing on thousands of years of Zapotec history, and making their way through the sights and smells of local markets. We all had a fabulous time and we'd love to have your child on one of our upcoming summer adventures.

There are spots left for our Oaxaca Street Photography and Oaxaca Adventure camps. Email for details and references from past travelers. We know that sending your child on these kinds of adventures is a leap of faith. We'd love to meet you and can't wait tell you about our plans and answer any questions you have.
