HIMS TALKS Looking for Guest Speakers

    Calling all guest speakers!

Hamilton International Middle School is looking for speakers for the 2019-20 HIMS TALKS. HIMS TALKS are student and community member led talks on topics that speakers are passionate about. The guiding principles behind HIMS TALKS are that they can connect middle schoolers to topics that offer both personal and global perspectives. The basic tenants are to broaden perspectives, cultivate global awareness, and connect community. The talks should be 15 minutes long with a 10 minute Q&A period. They will take place during advisory (8:55am – 9:25am) each month and are open to all students at all grade levels.

If interested and to receive additional information, please send your contact information to Dana Radcliffe (dpradcliffe@seattleschools.org). We would love to have as many community members as possible come speak to Hamilton students about topics and experiences that they are passionate about this year for HIMS TALKS. Thanks, gracias, and arigato!

Student Equity Team (SET) for Success

    Dear HIMS Families,

HIMS’ Racial Equity Team (RET) is happy to inform you, that we are creating HIMS’ first “Student Equity Team (SET) for Success.” As a community and village for our children, we are continuously searching for ways to infuse equity into all aspects of our school, so we have created a safe platform for our students to talk about such important topics, which directly impact them the most.

By forming “SET for Success,” we believe that this is a chance for our students to:

    • Incorporate their student voice into our HIMS community and beyond.
    • Collaborate with all staff to foster a safe and healthy climate.
    • Promote an inclusive culture that engages and draws on the assets of students, families, staff, and community members.
    • Encourage conversations about equity, racial equity, and social justice.

Students have had the opportunity to learn more about Equity and Racial Equity, in particular, in their Advisory classes, through interactions with HIMS staff and peers, and through past school assemblies. All HIMS students have learned important terms (i.e. Equity, race, racial equity, culture, community) and what being a “SET for Success” representative means to our Hamilton community. “SET for Success” representatives (main and alternate/s) are self-nominated and then teacher/staff selected.

We will begin meeting at the end of this month of October, and we will continue to have one meeting a month (typically the fourth or last Tuesday of the month, during Advisory). With Admin./Staff support only, we will be working with our students on both student-created and student-led agendas. Please encourage your child to learn more about “SET for Success” in their Advisory class, and, should they be interested in being a representative, to let their Advisory teacher know. If you have any questions about our overall “SET for Success” program, please contact:

    Anne Crowthers, AP/6th Grade Administrator/RET Admin.: adcrowthers@seattleschools.org
    Tina Camero, 8th Grade Counselor/RET Chair/BSU Moderator: ticamero@seattleschools.org
John McCartney, RET Representative/Journalism Teacher: jpmccartney@seattleschools.org

HIMS RET looks forward to this transformative opportunity for our students, school, and community, as a whole.

    Sincerely, HIMS Racial Equity Team
