HIMS TALKS Looking for Guest Speakers

    Calling all guest speakers!

Hamilton International Middle School is looking for speakers for the 2019-20 HIMS TALKS. HIMS TALKS are student and community member led talks on topics that speakers are passionate about. The guiding principles behind HIMS TALKS are that they can connect middle schoolers to topics that offer both personal and global perspectives. The basic tenants are to broaden perspectives, cultivate global awareness, and connect community. The talks should be 15 minutes long with a 10 minute Q&A period. They will take place during advisory (8:55am – 9:25am) each month and are open to all students at all grade levels.

If interested and to receive additional information, please send your contact information to Dana Radcliffe (dpradcliffe@seattleschools.org). We would love to have as many community members as possible come speak to Hamilton students about topics and experiences that they are passionate about this year for HIMS TALKS. Thanks, gracias, and arigato!

    The Great Washington ShakeOut!

    Dear HIMS Families,

We believe that in order to be able to react quickly in an emergency it is important to practice regularly. Every month our school participates in one Emergency Drill. Today, October 17th, our school participated in The Great Washington ShakeOut! The Great ShakeOut is the world’s largest earthquake drill. During this drill, the entire school practiced how to drop, cover, and hold on. Teaching our students and staff about earthquake safety helps ensure they know what to do to stay safe when the ground shakes.

Our school cares about your student’s safety and we want to ensure that you and your household also know how to stay safe during an earthquake. Disasters can happen at any time and any place, even at home and in the middle of the night. Discussing disaster preparedness at home as a family is important.

You can be better prepared for disasters in three steps:

    Know your hazards

    Have a plan

    • Things to consider are how to pick up your student from school in a disaster, where your meeting place is to reunite with family if you cannot return home, and who your out-of-area contact person is.

    Make kits

    • Items to include are water, non-perishable food, light source, first aid kit, comfort item, and personal hygiene items.
    • Start with small kits at work, in vehicles, and in your student’s backpack.
    • Continue storing supplies at home with the goal of being 2 weeks ready.

Please continue conversations at home with your student about disaster safety. Thank you for partnering with us to build resiliency in our school and keep our students safe!

    Sincerely,

    The Hamilton Safety Committee

    Athletics News

    Hamilton PTSA

Here's the Hawks Ultimate report from the weekend:

    • Hamilton 8 played perennial rivals Aki Kurose. After losing the first 4 points, Hamilton began to roll making the game close, but ultimately losing 8-5.
    • On a cold Saturday morning, Hawks 7/8 brought the heat! Crisp passing, hustle and teamwork led us to an 11-3 victory over Eckstein.
    • The 7th grade team debuted their horizontal stack against Hazel Wolf and came out victorious, 11-6.
    • Hawks 6/7 Yellow played an exciting and well-matched game against JAMS Purple with several extremely long points, but didn't quite manage a win this week.
    • Hawks 6 Blue met a significant challenge with their customary resolve and determination. While they fell short of victory against Eckstein, they should be proud of their effort.
