Washington State PTA Advocacy - Focus Day

Do you want to ensure every student receives the social-emotional support they deserve? Do you want to do more to prevent gun violence? Do you care about closing special education funding gaps? During each year’s legislative session, Washington State PTA holds its annual Focus Day that brings people together at the state capitol to advocate for our legislative priorities. If you're interested in making a difference on behalf of our students, you have a few ways to do so:

    1) Join HIMS parent Joanna Grist in Olympia on January 20 and meet face-to-face with legislators (registration required):

    https://www.wastatepta.org/events-programs/focus-day/

    2) Print out a postcard at the following link, fill it in with an issue you care about, and put a stamp on it: https://www.wastatepta.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Focus-Day-2020_Postcard-FINAL.pdf

    3) Sign up for WSPTA action alerts so you can be informed and involved on a regular basis:

    From Your Administrative Team

    Hamilton PTSA

    Hamilton Families,

Happy New Year! We hope that you and your students had a wonderful break. We are excited to have everyone back at school for the last 3 weeks of the semester. Now is a great time to check in with your students about their grades and assist them in making a plan for any missing work they need to turn in or any retakes they need to complete prior to the end of the semester. As a reminder, students have advisory time 3 times per week to meet with teacher for extra help or to retake assessments. If you have any questions about policies for turning in assignments or retaking assessments please reach out to the individual teacher.

It is already the season for us to start planning the master schedule for next year! We want to make sure that students have a voice in helping us determine the best electives to offer at Hamilton. Next week during advisory, 6th and 7th grade students will be receiving a survey about interest in electives. The results of this survey will be passed on to the Administrators and Master Scheduling team for consideration as we build a schedule for the 2020-20201 school year. At the bottom of the survey is also a space for family input. If you have comments or suggestions about potential electives, please feel free to share your ideas!

    Thank you, and go Hawks!

High School Information for 8th Grade Families

It’s that time of year…School Open House Season!

With the District Open Enrollment window happening February 3-14, high schools are now scheduling their open houses for mid-January and early February. These are important chances for incoming students to learn more about the enrollment process, school culture, extracurriculars, and meet some of the teachers and staff they will work with in high school. These opportunities are informative if your student is planning on attending your neighborhood assigned school or if they are interested in enrolling in a different school than the one they are assigned.

Here are some of the upcoming open houses for local high schools:

    • Lincoln High School – January 16 th at 7pm
    • Ballard High School – TBA, check their website for updates
    • Roosevelt High School – February 6 th at 7pm
    • Ingraham High School – January 14 th at 7pm
    • Ingraham High School International Baccalaureate Program – January 15 th at 7pm

If you are interested in another high school, please check their school website for information on their open houses and tours.

For incoming 6 th graders or those transferring to our school, Hamilton will be hosting an Open House on January 28 th at 6pm. Students and their families can tour the school and talk to staff about what their middle school experience might look like.

Have a wonderful break and a Happy New Year,

    The HIMS Admin Team

    Winter Concerts a Success!

The choir, bands and orchestra groups all had very successful concerts. A big thanks to students, families and the directors for their dedication and support!

The Eleventh Annual Music-a-thon is coming on Thursday, February 6th!

The Friends of Music at Hamilton International's (FOMAHI) Music-a-thon is an 11+ hour marathon of music provided by HIMS student musicians and ending with a Young Musician’s Concert in the evening. Our goal is to raise at least $40,000 to support music students at Hamilton.

Music-a-thon donations provide critical support for this year’s music program!

Funds raised during the 2020 Music-a-thon will be used this year to purchase instruments & sheet music, subsidize trips for all students, provide financial assistance to students in need, provide additional musical instruction, and cover festival fees, teacher grants & workshops.

Donation forms and envelopes will be going home with HIMS music students on Thursday, January 23rd, 2020.
