Wanted: 25 volunteer chaperones for the AWESOME 6th grade field trip to the Seattle Asian Art Museum! Please note that the SAAM/Volunteer Park campus can't accommodate our entire 6th grade glass at one time. Students in Ms. Graham's, Ms. Chacon's, and Ms. Leonas's social studies class will attend on May 1 IF enough chaperones volunteer!
(Students in Mr. Radcliffe's, Ms. Griffith's and Mr. Murphy's class will attend on May 7. Volunteers are also needed for this trip!)

Please complete the following before you plan to chaperone a field trip or volunteer with Hamilton students. Your paperwork must be on file at Hamilton or at another Seattle Public School before you volunteer with Hamilton students.
1. Print and complete each school year the SPS Volunteer Screening Form. (Return with a copy of photo ID, a driver’s license is great.) Volunteers working directly with students MUST be screened through Washington State Patrol’s Washington Access to Criminal History (WATCH) program--standard practice with agencies and organizations that serve children, youth and vulnerable adult populations.
2. Watch the district video: Adult Sexual Misconduct Prevention Course. Print your online certificate and return to the HIMS front desk, attention: Trina Torgelson, volunteer coordinator. This is a one-time requirement.
3. Read, sign and return to HIMSthe signature pages (pages 18-19) of the SPS District Volunteer Handbook.
4. Read, sign and return to HIMS: SPS Guidelines for Chaperones—Secondary Day Field Trips.
5. Read SPS District Policy No. 3246/Use of Reasonable Force and District Policy No. 5630/Volunteers.

Cinco de Mayo appreciation lunch:Please join Hamilton PTSA in saluting our many excellent teachers and teaching aides 5/5!
In addition to co-sponsoring a wonderful Cinco de Mayo Teacher Appreciation lunch on Tuesday with El Camion, the PTSA (working on your behalf) has also contributed funds for a delicious Monday morning before-school breakfast from the Essential Bakery in Fremont. The HIMS administrative staff is putting in extra time to make it a great week for the teaching staff, so please also give them your best.
While your teachers definitely appreciate the baked goods and the occasional Starbucks card, they also really appreciate hearing feedback about the great things they are doing! Happy about a writing assignment? Appreciate their use of the Fusion Pages? Thankful that your teacher spends her time outside of school coaching a sport and mentoring kids? Just happy knowing that your kid loves his teacher? Write to your teacher–or have your student write to the teacher–to let him or her know how much you value their work and their time.

PTSAGeneral Membership Meeting and "Meet the Principal" Social, 5/20
Please join us for the next Hamilton PTSA General Membership Meeting and Principal Social on May 20 at 7 pm in the Commons. We will have a short meeting to elect officers for the 2015-16 PTSA Board, and we will vote on a motion to make a one-time allocation of funds to replace some of the furniture items in the Hawk's Nest. We'll then adjourn to for some delicious treats and social time so you can chat with Principal Cindy Watters about her Singapore move and meet incoming Principal Tip Blish and learn a little more about his thoughts on Hamilton's future. This will be a relaxed and social gathering.

Changes to School Bell Times: Survey + Community Meeting TONIGHT, 4/30
Scientific research and national debate surrounding the effects of early school start times on student learning at the middle and high school level has prompted the Seattle Public School Board to take action.
The proposed changes to bell times introduce new issues that are complex and far reaching, impacting families, transit, after-school care, sports programs and more. Please attend a "Neighbor to Neighbor" community meeting at Hamilton International Middle School Commons area TONIGHT, April 30, from 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., to understand the proposed options, join the discussion, and participate in a written survey to capture your feedback for the school board. Your input is critical to the school board's decision-making process.

From the Counselors: High school registration for 8th graders, 5/5
High school counselors will be coming to Hamilton on May 5 during 5th period to register 8th graders for 9th grade. Many of the high schools have mailed out or delivered registration materials to students. Ingraham is one school that I know of that will be distributing its materials on May 5th when the high school counselors see their students. If your student has already received their registration forms, please be sure to have them bring them on May 5 to turn in to the high school counselors.
Budget Committee seeking members
The HIMS PTSA is seeking members to serve on a Budget Committee this spring. This committee will review expenses for the programs and events that have occurred in 2014-2015, evaluate new budgetary requests, and make recommendations to the board regarding the makeup of next year's budget.
Our expectation is that the committee will meet twice in May for a total of about 4 hours. The PTSA Treasurer will chair the meetings. Please contact Treasurer Barbara Vaughey at email@example.com if you are interested in volunteering for the Budget Committee.
Financial Review Committee seeking members
We are also seeking one or two individuals who can serve on a committee to review and audit the PTSA’s financial records after the close of our 2014-2015 fiscal year. The state PTSA provides a checklist for committee members to use, and does not expect that members will have an accounting background.
Our expectation is that the financial review will take a total of about 3-4 hours and should be performed in July or early August, to be scheduled at the convenience of the committee.

7th grade field trip 5/15--volunteers needed!!
The 7th graders are heading to UW to attend a history lecture and tour the Computer Science and Engineering building. This field trip will happen on Friday, May 15th. We will leave school at 9:30 and return around 1:30.

Want to get more involved with the PTSA next year and help set our agenda? Several positions are available on next year’s PTSA Board and we are seeking parents who can bring fresh energy and the benefit of their unique experiences.
A number of this year’s Board members will return to their positions next year, which will give the Board much-needed stability and institutional memory, but a healthy board is one with a wide variety of perspectives. • Secretary – Responsible for maintaining the non-financial records of the organization, and takes minutes at the monthly PTSA Board meeting and at the 3 annual general membership meetings. The Secretary is a member of the board’s executive committee and helps to provide leadership and direction to the organization.
• Vice-President of Events – Should enjoy getting to know the Hamilton International families and putting together people who want to help with events at Hamilton International. S/he will work with chairs for our various events and provide oversight for that aspect of PTSA business. S/he may also choose to seek out speakers for our General Membership meetings.
• Legislative Liaison – Keeps the board and Hamilton International parents updated re: public school topics and initiatives at the state and local level.
• 6th Grade Liaison – Should be the parent of a 6th grader at Hamilton International. Can serve as a point of contact between the PTSA Board and 6th Grade families. Plans & organizes a social event for 6th Grade families.
• 7th Grade Liaison – should be the parent of a 7th grader at Hamilton International. Can serve as a point of contact between the PTSA Board and 7th Grade families. Plans & organizes a social event for 7th Grade families.
And last but not least, PTSA President – the President is responsible for providing leadership and direction to the organization. The President should enjoy keeping track of the "big picture," be a good organizer, be comfortable leading low-key meetings, and be good at delegating. 8th GRADE DANCE: THANK YOU TO MARY & ANNIE!
Many thanks to Mary O. and Annie H., coordinators of the PTSA 8th Grade Dance, and to all the volunteers and students who made it happen! This event requires lots of organization and lots of parent help, but the kids really enjoy celebrating the end of the 8th grade year at their first evening dance.
Leftover pizza from the event went to the Spring Reign Ultimate tournament on Saturday to feed Hamilton's hungry Ultimate players. Thanks to everyone who participated!
SEATTLE SKILLS CENTER: SUMMER PROGRAM INFO
Attention 8th graders (a.k.a. soon-to-be high schoolers):
There is a great opportunity to explore different careers and get a head start on high school credits through Seattle’s Skills Center Summer Program. There are two sessions and students can earn up to one full high school credit towards graduation. There will be different programs all across the city, but there will also be some great ones closer to home in the north end of the city.
Examples are Computer Applications; Culinary Arts; Engineering; Maritime Sciences at Ballard HS; Into to Medical Careers at the Lincoln Building; Multimedia Broadcasting at Nathan Hale HS; Computer Applications and Culinary Arts at Roosevelt HS; and AIE Digital Cyber Camp at Seattle Center Armory.
If you're interested, see Mr. Yeda in the Counseling Office. Classes are filled on a “first come-first served” basis, so get you application turned in as soon a possible. The deadline for applications is 5/29/15.

Hello Music Parents,
What an amazing year of music we’ve had to date! It has been a pleasure to watch every student grow enraptured with the beauty and joy of music. Not a day goes by that I think how lucky my son is to attend a school that not only allows the arts, it embraces it. Friends of Music at Hamilton International (FOMAHI) plays a major role in every aspect of the music program, from funding core elements to finding volunteers to help wrangle the students during concerts and trips. And it all starts with the FOMAHI Board.
One of the great pleasures of my life this past year has been serving as Co-President of the FOMAHI board. I joined because I believe in the music program, and wanted to do whatever small thing I could to help it thrive. What I didn’t expect was how it would bring me closer to my child. When I leave once a month to go to the board meetings, he beams with pride. He cannot wait to hear what’s going on the next morning in every aspect of the program. And when he introduces me to his friends, he proudly proclaims, “She’s works for FOMAHI!”
While that may not impress his friends – most just say, “What’s that?” – it makes me beam with pride. Not because I “work for FOMAHI,” but because I did something good for our children. Bonus: I have met some wonderful people who I look forward to keeping touch with for years to come, including my fabulous co-president, Mimi Chiu, treasurer/superwoman Jenny Peters, our intrepid communications chair, Angele Hunskor, who kept you in the loop all year, and volunteer coordinator extraordinaire Shannon Romer, all of whom will be leaving our school after this year. Thank you for a fantastic year and your help, ladies.
Those are some big shoes to fill, but we must find someone to step into them. So I’m appealing to all of you today to do something for our children. Consider taking a role on the board or a committee for the 2015-16 school year. No role is too small. Master baker? Help us with bake sales at our concerts. Know everyone in school? We could use your help with volunteers. Bursting with ideas about how raise money? Have we got a role for you. And yes, we do need co-presidents. You will have the support and assistance of current board members who are returning, plus some who won’t be officially on the board, but available for questions and guidance.
Together, we can ensure that music stays alive in our school for years to come. It’s a wonderful journey–I hope you’ll join us as we embark on it again next year. Thank you.
