Bring Steel Pan to HIMS
Help Bring Steel Pan to HIMS
Hamilton International Middle School (HIMS) has the rare opportunity to add Steel Pan to our curriculum and after School Program. Michael Shantz a world-renowned expert in the field of Steel Pan music, has agreed to participate in this pursuit.
HIMS has a diverse student body and strives to educate the whole child so that each student feels connected, engaged, successful and joyful.
Steel Pan offers students that often do not connect with Western traditional music style, have challenges engaging with large classes, feel their cultural voice is not represented or a place in their school’s Arts education courses. We at HIMS want to expand opportunities so that all students can be proud of their contribution to the larger community, find passion and joy in the Arts and nurture an outlet for personal growth and self-expression.
Steel Pan will also allow students the opportunity to join the larger Seattle Community by performing in Festivals, Civic Functions, working with the international Arts community and make life-long connections with our leaders and elders.
“Every form of human social exclusion – race, class, ethnicity, religion, education, nationality, age, gender – has been transcended in the steel pan movement without breaking stride.
Before pan is encountered as music, it is experienced as a form of belonging.“
